1.1 Overview
The CLIP (Calling Line Identifier Protocol) service allows the caller number to be sent on a
public network analog line.

Chapter 1 %&&#'

# $ ! %&&#'

2

2.1 Basic Description

This service is not provided by all public networks and requires a special subscription. CLIP
information is coded and transmitted on the analog line using the ETSI or Bellcore protocol.
Data is transmitted according to FSK (V23) or DTMF (Q23) standards.
This service requires the presence of an NDDI2 board on the ACT Media Gateway or an APA
board on the OmniPCX Media Gateway.
The calling number received is used by the different PCX features in the same way as an
ISDN call.

NDDI2 and APA boards support the FSK transmission mode.

As of R6.2, the APA board supports the DTMF transmission mode.

3

3.1 Messages Received

Among the information contained in the messages, the PCX processes only the calling line
identity or, if it is absent, the reason for the absence. The date and time received are not taken
into account and cannot be used to update those of the PCX.
The messages transmitted on the analog links can be of four types, as described in the
following sections. Actually, the PCX processes only the first two.

3.1.1 Call Setup Message

This message concerns the incoming calls. It may contain the following information:
- Date and time (not taken into account)
- Calling line identity
- Reason for absence of the calling line identity
- Calling party name
- Reason for absence of the calling party name
- Call type (not taken into account)
- Type of calling user (not taken into account)

3.1.2 Basic Caller Display Message with Single Data Format

This message concerns the incoming calls and contains the following information:
- Date and time (not taken into account by the PCX)
- Calling party number or reason for absence of the calling party number (identity secrecy)

3.1.3 Message Waiting Indicator

This type of message is never transmitted by the public network, the PCX is not therefore
designed to process them.

3.1.4 Advice of Charge Message

This type of message can be used to transmit information about metering once the link is
established (off-hook data transmission). The public network does not send such messages,
the PCX is not therefore designed to process them.

3.2 Protocols
The protocol used depends on the country and the public network operator. The main
standards (Bellcore and ETSI) consider:

, ! " ! %() ! -) # +(#)# 3-1

Chapter 3 -) # +(#)#

- On-hook data transmission : transmission is performed on the line in the idle state. The
signal transmission can be associated with the ringing pulses, or not. The PCX only uses
the transmission associated with the ringing.
- Off-hook data transmission : transmission is performed on the connected line. This
transmission mode is used mainly for “ Call Waiting ” type messages. As the PCX is not
liable to receive such messages from the public network, this protocol is not implemented
on the PCX.
The following sections introduce “ on-hook data transmission ” protocol types associated with
the ringing pulses, the only ones to be implemented on the PCX. These protocols are specified
by the alert signal preceeding data transmission. In any case, this signal must be followed by a
valid call signal. Timeout durations can be managed.
The ETSI standard manages the four alert signals. For the Bellcore standard (used in the
USA), the alert signal is necessarily a “ short ringing burst" signal.
According to configuration, the transmission of data can be performed:
- On asynchronous voice band Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) based upon the ITU-T rec:
V23 . This option is available on NDDI2 and APA boards
- On DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency). As of R6.2, this option is available on APA boards
only .

3.2.1 Transmission Before Ringing: Ringing Burst Alert

CLIP data is transmitted between a short ringing pulse and the first ringing.

3.2.2 Transmission During Ringing: Long Ringing

CLIP data is transmitted during the silence period, between the first and the second ringing.
Countries concerned: USA, Singapore, Hong Kong

3.2.3 Transmission Before Ringing: Dual Tone Alert

CLIP data is transmitted between an alert tone and the first ringing.

3-2 , ! " ! %() ! -) # +(#)#

-) # +(#)#

3.2.4 Transmission Before Ringing: Battery Reversal + Dual Tone Alert

CLIP data is transmitted after a battery reversal followed by a Dual alert tone and before the
first ringing.
Country concerned: United Kingdom (British Telecom)

3.2.5 Transmission Without Alert Signal

The CLIP data is transmitted without any alert signal.
The APA board is able to process this data.
Country concerned: USA.
A DSP from the CLIDSP board (daughterboard of the APA board) is permanently connected to
the trunk group.

Chapter 3 -) # +(#)#

3-4 , ! " ! %() ! -) # +(#)#

4

4.1 Interaction
The number received is used as for an ISDN call by the following features:
- presentation of the calling party name: the calling party name is displayed if his number
belongs to an abbreviated number table,
- metering: the metering ticket contains the calling party number in the “Called number” field,
- selective filtering (RISO/PRISO keys),
- transit on the ABC-F, DPNSS and QSIG links,
- saving the number of the last calling party,
- saving the unanswered calls,
- last number redial function,
- DISA,
- etc.

5

5.1 Installing the NDDI2 Board

On Crystal Hardware , the CLIP information received on the NDDI trunk group can only be
taken into account by the PCX when trunks are supported by an LS/GS (NDDI2) board
equipped with two CLIPIA daughter boards (see the module NDDI2 (LS/GS) - Hardware
description and the module NDDI2 (LS/GS) - Hardware configuration for the daughter board
position).
Each CLIPIA daughter board is dedicated to four trunks. It ensures the line impedance
adaptation necessary to receive the signal.
The board must be set to adapt to the protocol used by the public network (see the module
NDDI2 (LS/GS) - Hardware configuration ).

5.2 Installing the APA Board

On Common Hardware , the CLIP information received on the NDDI trunk group can only be
taken into account by the PCX when trunks are supported by an APA board equipped with a
CLIDSP daughter board.
The DSP of this daughter board is permanently connected to the time slot concerned, allowing
it to receive CLIP information without an alert signal (standard transmission for the USA).
In some countries, the public network requires handling of the AC/DC impedance. If this is the
case, the APA board must also be equipped with an METCLI (ETSI protocol) or GSCLI
(Bellcore) daughter board. Refer to: module APA board - Connection .
Note: The METCLI board is able to process metering data.
The GSCLI board is used to implement the Ground Start protocol (used for the USA).

Caution: When the CLIP Signalization parameter of a given board is first modified, the Call Server
must be reset (shutdown).

Note: When the CLIP Signalization parameter is subsequently modified, only the board (NDDI2 or APA)
needs resetting.

6.3 Managing Timers

The timers governing CLIP data transfer can be managed in the CLIP Timers object. Times
are expressed in units of 10 ms.
The Min Duration Call Signal and Min Duration Tone timers must always be set at a value
other than 0. For the other timers, a null value means that the timer is not used.
The values given below are the default values for France. These values are given as
examples.

6.4 Managing the External callback translator

This operation must be performed for the service to operate, whether the system has ISDN
lines or not.
