Episode 6 provides an opportunities for me to have a more in-depth study of factors that
affect the development of a learner. Focus will be on the early experiences and characteristics
of the learner as described by the family and other significant others.

My Intended Learning Outcomes

In this episode, I must be able to:

 describe the influencing factors in the home environment that affect the students’
learning
 identify effective strategies on how teachers can work together with the family

My Performance Criteria

I will be rated along the following:

 quality of my observation and documentation,

 completeness and depth of analysis,
 depth and clarity of classroom observation-based reflection,
 completeness, organization, clarity of portfolio and
 time of submission of portfolio.

My Learning Essentials

Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Bio-ecological model presents the learner within the context of
layers of relationship systems-that make up the learners’ environment. The layers are:

Microsystem - Mesosystem - Exosystem - Macrosystem - Chronosystem

includes the the connection the bigger social Outermost layer - the element of
structure such between the system which which includes time, patterns of
as, one’s family, structures in the includes the city cultural values, stability and
school and microsystem government, the customs and pacing of the
neighborhood workplace and laws child’s everyday
the mass media life.

The model helps the teacher look into every aspect in the learner’s environment to
understand his behavior. The teacher’s important role is not to replace what is missing at home
(if any), but to work so that the school becomes an environment that welcomes and nurtures
families. The teacher works to create a partnership with the family and the community to bring
out the best in every learner.

My Map
To realize my Intended Learning Outcomes, I will work my way through these
steps.

Cognitive Development
Talking about his cognitive development, it is constantly developing as he
comes to school and study. He performs well in school. He can be classified as a fast
learner thus participates actively during class discussion. He is motivated by the
attitude his parents show towards learning at home.
Findings
The learner is a mediocre student and responsible in his studies. The way he
is trained at home is carried to school as shown by his good performance and
progressive attitude towards learning. Being a firm yet loving parent as what his
parents are rendering, really helps in building the child’s personality. They become
more self-determining and he has a higher self-esteem. Also, he do respect his
parents way of parenting and it is seen the way he develops his good social
interaction to other and to his nurturing environment.
Conclusions
Above all the information being rendered, I therefore conclude that both the
home and school have a massive effect in molding the cognitive, affective,
psychomotor and other domains of child’s development. Therefore, the learning of the
child starts at home. It is where they learn values, works and his cognizance is first
nurtured. On the other side, school also plays a vital role in developing the child since
it is their second home and has the purpose of developing the physical, social,
emotional, moral, psychological and cognitive aspects of the learner. As the child
goes to study from pre-school until college, he spends most of his time in school
rather than at home. Wrapping it all up, home and school has a vital role in the total
development of a child. The parents and the second ones which are the teachers or
instructors are the most important agent in a learning environment that impart
knowledge and values with the learners.
Recommendations
I do recommend that both the parents and teacher should be diligent enough
and patient in nurturing the learners. They should construct strategies in order to
catch the interest and attention of the students. Teachers must not forget the mere
purpose of education and that is to make the students learn. For the parents, they
must especially be responsible enough in guiding their children, proper way of
disciplining the child should concur. Giving out encouragement to focus and study
hard to have a better future would really be a great help for the learner. The role of the
learner also is an important role. They should have with them the sense of
responsibility. They must ensure to themselves that they are motivated to learn and
participate since they are responsible of their own learning with the utmost guidance
of parents and teachers.

Your findings and recommendations in the Learner Development Profile will help
you answer the questions here.

1. From your home visit and interview, what do you think is the style of parenting
experienced by the learner? Explain you answer.

From the interview I conducted and the information gathered, I think the
child is experiencing authoritative style of learning. Imposing rules at home especially in
studying can result to the child valuing of the essence of education. It is also a very
helpful approach to stress perseverance and self-reliance on the part of the learner. The
parent can also be classified as permissive as the child’s choice for his peers is
approved by his parents as long as it is for the good.
2. Relating your data with what you learned from child development, what family
factors do you think contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of
the learner in school?

Parent’s guidance plays an integral part on the development of the

learner. Learners whose parents support their academic achievement perform better
than students who receive none. When a learner’s parental relationship is lacking in
terms of supervision, the more it is likely for him to be influenced by peers. Authoritative
parenting as practiced by the parent I have interviewed, encourages students to be
more responsible and reliant towards learning. Positive family relationship guides a
learner towards good influences. Moreover, through the interactions on a day-to-day,
parents can foster and guide their child in different domains like cognitive, emotional
and behavioral aspects.

3. Does the communication between the home-school have an effect on the

learner? If yes, what are these effects?

Yes, I do believe that the communication between the home-school have a

huge effect on the learner as both plays a vital role in the learning of the children. They
say education begins at home, it is where the learner is first nurtured when it comes to
developing their principles and values in life yet in addition, school also is there to
further develop what is being taught at home. It is where the students learn more
complex ideas that they can also use in a day-to-day living. It is not just for the learner
itself but for the teacher and parents also as a learning is a two-way process where both
the teacher and parents can learn from their students. Learning is a continuous process.

1. Reflect on your own development as a child, what type of parenting did you
experience? How did it affect you?

Since elementary grade up until now, I’m not guided by my parents in

doing my homeworks, projects and other school activities. This somehow shaped
me into an independent student doing school stuff without anyone’s assistance. I
came from a broken family and maybe this is one of the reason why I became this
self-determining. Nevertheless, this nurtured me to study hard and persevere more
just to return the favor to my father who’s working hard alone just to send me and my
brother to school.

2. As a future teacher, how would you establish good home-school

collaboration? How can you work well with the parents? How can you help
them? How can they help you?

This last episode of Field Study 1 made me realize that parent plays a vital
role in their child’s development since they are first nurtured at home. Someday, If
God will help me realize my dream profession which is to become an educator, I will
be gladly working with my students’ parents through having a scheduled meeting
with them discussing their children’s need psychologically and emotionally. I
suppose this will help me construct the best teaching strategies depending upon the
parents’ commentaries regarding their child’s abilities. Anything can work well with
good communication.
