1) The power input to a 3-phase induction motor is 40 KW. The stator losses total 1 KW and
the friction and windage losses total 2 KW. If the slip of the motor is 4%, find
i) Mechanical power output
ii) Rotor Cu. Loss per phase and
iii) Efficiency
2) A 3 phase induction motor having a star connected rotor has an induced emf of 85v between
slip rings at stand still on open circuit. The rotor has a resistance and reactance per phase
of 1.5 Ω and 4.2 Ω respectively. Calculate current per phase and power factor when
i) Slip rings and short circuited
ii) Slip rings connected to a star connected rheostat
3) A 3 phase, 50 Hz 6 pole induction motor has a shaft power of 10 KW at 950 rpm. Friction
and windage losses are 2 % of output. If the stator copper loss 500W
i) Determine the rotor input & stator input.
ii) If maximum torque developed at 900 rpm. Calculate the starting torque with rated
iii) Voltage.
4) A 3 phase, 50 Hz induction motor with its rotor star connected gives 500 V(r.m.s) at
standstill between the slip rings on open circuit. Calculate the current and power factor at
standstill when the rotor winding is joined to a star connected external circuit, each phase
of which has a resistance of 10 Ω and an inductance of 0.04H. The resistance per phase of
the rotor winding is 0.2 Ω and its inductance is 0.04H.
5) Also, calculate the current and power factor when the slip rings are short-circuited and the
motor is running with a slip of 5 percent. Assume the flux to remain constant.
6) A 746 kW, 3 phase, 50 Hz, 16 pole induction motor has a rotor impedance of (0.02 +j 0.15)
Ω at standstill , Full-load torque is obtained at 360 r.p.m. Calculate:
i) The ratio of maximum to full load torque
ii) The speed of maximum torque
iii) The rotor resistance to be added to get maximum starting torque
7) A 3-phase induction motor having a 6-pole, star connected stator winding runs on 240V,
50 Hz supply. The rotor resistance and standstill reactance are 0.12 Ω and 0.85 Ω per phase.
The ratio of stator to roto turns is 1.8. Full load slip s 4%. Calculate the developed torque
at full load, maximum torque and speed at maximum torque.
8) A 4-pole, 3-phae, 50 Hz induction motor has a voltage between slip-rings on open circuits
of 520 V. The star-connected rotor has a standstill reactance and resistance of 2 and 0.4 Ω
per phase respectively, Determine:
i) The full load torque if full-load speed is 1425 r.p.m.
ii) The ratio of starting torque to full-load torque
iii) The additional rotor resistance required to give maximum torque occurs.
9) The rotor of an 8-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase induction motor has a resistance of 0.2 Ω per phase
and runs at 720 r.p.m If the load torque remains unchanged. Calculate the additional rotor
resistance that will reduce this speed by 10%.
10) A 6-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor has rotor resistance and reactance of 0.02 Ω and
0.1 Ω respectively per phase. At what speed would it develop maximum torque? Find out
the value of resistance necessary to give half of maximum torque at starting.
11) A 3-phase induction motor has a rotor for which the resistance per phase is 0.1 Ω and the
reactance per phase when stationary is 0.4 Ω. The rotor induced e.m.f. per phase is 100v
when stationary. Calculate the rotor current and rotor power factor (a) when stationary (b)
when running with a slip of 5 percent.
12) The power input to the rotor of 440V, 50 Hz, 6-pole, 3-phase, induction motor is 80 kW.
The rotor electromotive force is observed to make 100 complete alterations per minute.

1425 rpm. The rotor has an impedance of (0.4 + j 4) Ω and rotor/stator turn ratio of 0.8.
Calculate (i) full load torque (ii) rotor current and full-load rotor Cu loss (iii) power output
if windage and friction losses amount to 500 W (iv) maximum torque and the speed at
which it occurs (v) starting current and (vi) starting torque.
14) A 100kW(output), 3300V, 50 Hz, 3-phase , star connected induction motor has a
synchronous speed of 500 rpm . the full load slip is 1.8% and F.L. power factor 0.85. Stator
copper loss=2440W. Iron loss=3500W. Rotational losses = 1200 W. Calculate (i) the rotor
copper loss (ii) the line current (iii) the full-load efficiency.
