The generator is a two-pole, cylindrical rotor, hydrogen and water cooled, synchronous generator.
This report documents no-load running tests performed in the test facility of General Electric
Company. These tests were performed in August 2018.
The generator was driven by a motor. All tests are made in accordance with Standard IEC 60034
and/or IEEE 115.
Excitation current to the field winding was provided by a facility static exciter. The field voltage
current was measured by means of a current shunt and auxiliary brushes on the rotor slip rings.

The core iron losses and other magnetic losses were determined as part of the open circuit core
loss curve. The stray load loss has been determined as part of the short circuit losses. The fan and
windage losses have been determined from shaft power measurements at various cooling gas
densities. See Section 6.3. The bearing and hydrogen seal losses have been determined by
measurement of the oil volume flow rates and the oil temperature rises.
Data for the open circuit loss curve were measured during the open circuit saturation characteristic
test. See Table 14 and Figure 4.

The friction and windage losses are determined by measuring the shaft input power at zero
excitation for test points with varying cooling gas density. See Table 16 and Figure 6. The friction
losses include bearings, hydrogen seals, the shaft coupling, and collector rings. The windage losses
include the generator fans and rotor windage.

The conversion of fan and windage losses at 98.0% of hydrogen purity is:
The bearing losses and shaft seal were determined by measured oil flow rates and temperature
rises:
DE bearing 610kW
Slipring bearing 67kW (not in generator scope, but present during test)
The losses and efficiency are reported in Table 17 and are in reference to the generator rating listed
in Table 1. The winding resistive losses have been adjusted to 95 °C average winding copper
temperatures. The fan and windage loss is adjusted to a reference gas density at rated pressure at
sea level, 98% hydrogen purity, and a 40 °C gas temperature.
The "Other Friction Losses" represents the balance of the fixed mechanical losses not otherwise
included in the bearings and hydrogen seals. It includes coupling windage losses, collector ring
friction losses, slipring shaft bearing losses. It also includes any net measurement inaccuracies.

7 Thermal Tests
Heat run tests at zero excitation, rated open circuit armature voltage, and rated short circuit
armature current were performed. The data are listed in Section 11.1.
The thermal performance of the armature winding is determined according Standard. Table 18 lists
the maximum expected temperature rise of the armature winding based upon the armature
temperature measurements in Section 11.1.
The field winding average temperature rise over the average cold gas temperature was determined
by the resistance method at various open circuit armature voltage and short circuit armature current
heat runs. See Table 19. The field winding voltage does not include the voltage drop for collector
brushes.
The allowable temperature rise over 40 ºC cold gas is 70 K. At full load, the average field winding
temperature rise, based on the data in Table 19, is projected to be 30.9 K.

Three-phase sudden short circuit tests were performed at 50 Hz from no-load at voltages in Table
21. For each test, digital recordings of the current and voltage waveforms were analyzed to
determine the direct axis reactances and time constants. The data for the three phases were
averaged for each voltage test point. The resulting reactances and time constants are listed in Table
22. The reactances are plotted as a function of the test voltage, as shown in Figure 8, to determine
the corresponding rated voltage and rated current values. The reactances have been determined for
the rated frequency, current, and voltage corresponding to the rating in Table 1.
