Introduction of thermal engineering

Thermal engineering is a specialized sub-discipline of mechanical engineering that deals
with the movement of heat energy and transfer. The energy can be transferred between
two mediums or transformed into other forms of energy. ... Many plants use heat exchangers
in their operations.

Uses of thermal engineering

Thermal engineers design systems which provide heating or cooling, using
thermodynamics, that transfer heat or energy through liquids and gases. They also
construct these systems, and perform test to ensure proper functionality.

Various branches of thermal engineering

Specialized fields of thermal engineering are as follows:
 Heat Transfer and Thermal Power.
 Thermal Science and Energy Systems.
 Thermal System Design.
 Thermodynamics & Combustion Engineering.
 Refrigeration & Air Conditioning.
 Hydro-Turbomachines.
 Thermal Turbomachines.
 I.C. Engines.

PROCESS
The basis of thermal process engineering is thermal separation processes. In mixtures
made up of at least two components, heat and material transfer processes are used to
selectively change the composition (concentration) of the mixture.

 Important of thermal engineering

The principles of thermal engineering are also crucial to the operation of vehicles and
other machines. Thermal engineering is important to the design of a car battery. Heat
transfer is a major concern within the field. The transfer of energy, in the form of heat, across
different physical regions is heat transfer.

Different thermal processes

There are four types of thermal processes that you guys need to know. There
are isothermal processes, isobaric processes, isochoric processes and adiabatic
processes.
*What is the biggest difference between heat and
temperature?
The core difference is that heat deals with thermal energy, whereas temperature is more
concerned with molecular kinetic energy. Heat is the transfer of thermal energy, whereas
temperature is a property the object exhibits

What is non thermal processing?

Processing of foods without the application of heat is termed as the non-thermal
processing. The most widely used non-thermal processing techniques are high pressure
processing, pulsed electric field, ultrasound, pulsed light, ultraviolet light, irradiation,
oscillating magnetic field etc.

Disadvantages of Thermal Power Plants

 Thermal Power Plants use Fossil Fuels to generate electricity, and these
fossil fuels causes pollution.
 A large water source is required to convert water into steam.
 It has low overall efficiency.
 Its maintenance cost is high.
Advantages of Thermal Power Plants
 Making Energy from Thermal Power plants is easy.
 The fuel used (coal) is cheap.
 Thermal Power Plant can be set up anywhere near fuel and water supply.
 It requires less space as compared to the hydroelectric power station.

Thermal Engineering advantages and disadvantages

Advantages
1. The fuel used is quite cheap.
2. Less initial cost as compared to other generating plants.
3. It can beinstalled at any place iirespective of the existence of coal. The
coal can be transported to the site of the plant by rail or road.
4. It require less space as compared to Hydro power plants.
5. Cost of generation is less than that of diesel power plants.
Disadvantages
1. It pollutes the atmosphere due to production of large amount of smoke and
fumes.
2. It is costlier in running cost as compared to Hydro electric plants.

Applications
