INTRODUCTION/ BACKGROUND
AGELICO is a Community Based Agricultural and Environmental NGO whose main objective is to
educate, train and facilitate the transfer of modern agricultural information and technological skills
to small scale-holder-farmers to enable them to develop sustainable and diversified agricultural
productivity.
AGELICO has an extensive grassroots network as well as a rich experience in dealing with
community at the grassroot level. Most of AGELICO’s projects that have impacted on the community
positively are implemented through women and youth groups as well as special interest groups
commonly known as Common Interest Groups (CIGs). These activities of are accomplished through
a team framework, made up of professional staff with not only vast experiences in community
development but also strong academic and professional backgrounds. We partner with Government
and Non-State Actors (NSAs) in ensuring that intended benefits are delivered to the communities in
time and at least costs.
We, Agro Environmental Life Impact Community Organisation (AGELICO) declare that we are
committed to the principles of participatory human development and development cooperation. We
are apolitical and not profit-making and promise that the activities shall be undertaken without

AGELICO IN ACTION WHAT AGELICO DOES
CORE PROGRAMMES
Environmental conservation education
Food production and marketing
Capacity building for farmers
Governance and empowerment
Tree planting and adopting
Soil and water management.
1. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
Under this program communities and individuals are inspired to engage in activities that safeguard
and improve the environment in order to conserve it for future generations. We reclaim degraded
lands through planting trees, grass and erecting gabions.
We also re-afforest up streams and gullies. We encourage the building of waterpans, spill-overs,
terraces and mulch crops for soil and water conservation.
2. FOOD PRODUCTION AND MARKETING
We promote production and enterprise of drought resilient crops and varieties to enhance availability of
house-hold foods during dry seasons.
These also help in providing adequate nutrients to the house-holds thereby promoting healthy
families for food production.
Under this farmers learn and practice initiatives that enable them to adequately produce nutritious
foods from their farms for both house-hold use and for income generation.
3. CAPACITY BUILDING FOR FARMERS
This intervention is aimed at empowering the farmer in terms of agricultural knowledge
information and technology.
It helps the farmer to know the management, varieties and production of various crops and
livestock.
It also enables the farmer to manage and conserve agricultural support resources i.e. water, soil
catchments etc.
Farmers are trained in soil conservation and management, water conservation management and
harvesting.
We also train farmers on mixed farming; inter-cropping, timely planting, disease and pest control,
market timing, agro-processing and marketing. Farmers are trained in low-cost technology that
would enable them to store and continue producing after the rains.
We also train farmers in agricultural value-chain management i.e. agro-processing, packaging and
marketing for income generation.
We also promote the emerging livestock and crops
e.g. rabbits, guinea fowls, alo-vera, neem and fruits.
Green-house technology, drip irrigation and high value crop production e.g. flowers etc. are among
the new technology initiatives.
4. GOVERNANCE AND EMPOWERMENT
Governments render a core function to the development and survival of agriculture and
environment. It is the government that formulates policies that guide and determine the survival of
agriculture and environment. It allocates land for farming, forests, water-bodies and infrastructure
all of which are necessary for agriculture to thrive .It’s for this reason that farmers should be trained
on civic education in order to understand how the government works, their rights and
responsibilities, various policies governing the utilization of water, land and infrastructure, various
laws that regulates production and marketing of crop and animal products.
On the other hand the farmer should be fully aware of his rights from the government; the function
of the government towards farmer protection in terms of natural resources and market protection,
and also on policies that influence his livelihood, production and well-being.
Enhancing farmers’ capacity to produce and trade within the republic goes a long way in
empowering him to live a quality long life.
5. TREE PLANTING AND ADOPTING
This program is aimed at fulfilling two indivisible functions; that of providing wood for fuel and construction and
that of protecting the environment through catchment management and hydrological
cycle. Adoption of green energy as the main energy source is also underscored.
It restores habitats for local bio-diversity i.e. animals including birds, wildlife and fish habituate
harmoniously without threats of extinction. The household demands on wood fuel would highly
impact on the environment negatively threatening the survival of plants and animals and the
continuity of the hydrological cycle.
Planting trees and adopting them for shade, firewood or timber helps to sustainably maintain the
wider bio-diversity. Future generations stand to benefit through this program for its posterity.
6. SOIL AND WATER MANAGEMENT
Under this program farmers are trained and encouraged to conserve soil and water through various
eco-friendly approaches. To conserve soils helps in sustaining habitat for micro-organisms and
other below surface organisms, which help in aerating soils and decomposition that help in crop
production.
Conserving water helps in reducing soil erosion and enable farmers to save on the time used in
fetching water.
It also provides a source of water for domestic and farm use during dry seasons. Digging of water-
pans, micro and macro catchment management, roof rain water harvesting and sinking of wells are
among the initiatives that AGELICO encourages farmers to use in water conservation and
management.
