PHILOSOPHICAL FILM REVIEW:

DIE BEAUTIFUL
The film "Die Beautiful" portrays the narrative and
difficulties of Trisha Echevarria, a transgender man who was
rejected by his wealthy father and maintained on her own by
competing in beauty pageants (IMDd, 2016). She adored
participating in beauty contests. However, Trisha passes away
from an aneurysm shortly after earning the most prized
crown of her pageant journey in the film. Yet, amidst her
shortcomings and grotesqueries, Trisha manages to find
satisfaction and contentment in several things that come her
way in life, even in the middle of cruelty, misery, deception,
and grief (Cambri & Natividad, 2017). If she were to die,
Trisha's only request would be to be displayed as a celeb on
each night of her wake. That is why, in spite of mourning her
loss, Barbs offers Tricia a fresh make-up look for each night
of her burial, as Trisha requested.

Having said that, there are a variety of perspectives on

death philosophies that may be gathered from the film. The
first philosophy of death emphasized in the video is Martin
Heidegger's belief that humans are "beings-towards-death." In
which we become aware of our frailty and comprehend our
existence as a result of death. In the film, even though
Trisha was disowned by his father upon coming out as a
transgender, that didn’t stop her from breaking boundaries
that was set on her; that didn’t stop her from pursuing what
she loves to do which is beauty pageants. Why? Well, it is
probably because she somehow became already aware of the
concept of death. That we people only have a once in a
lifetime experience in this world, and that we should make
the most out of it.
Another view on the philosophy of death that can be
seen from the film is Soren Kierkegaard’s view that “ death is
an uncertain certainty” and “ death helps us become aware of
the purpose of our existence” . In the film, Trisha may have
been aware that death will come for her but is not certain of
the time it will arrive. Thus, her thoughts about death, made
it become apparent for her the things and goals that she
wanted to do and achieve — which is joining beauty pageants
and winning the most coveted crown of her pageant career.
Therefore, she seized her life by making herself happy in
order to counter her thoughts about death.

Lastly, the final philosophical view towards death that

can be seen from the film is Zhuang Zi’s belief that “ There is
no reason to fear death because it is inevitable, rather, it
should be celebrated.” This concept can be seen from how
Barbs manage to cope up with Trisha’s death by heeding her
last wishes. Wherein, Barbs gave different makeup looks to
Trisha in each night of her interment. This just shows that
Trisha wants her death to be celebrated by the people who
care for her. Likewise, Barbs doing her makeup in each of her
wake is a sign of celebrating her friend’s death despite the
pain from mourning it.

Overall, the film shows to us that life will always be

filled with surprises. Even such a thing as death, is something
that would also come to us unexpectedly. However, it showed
us that we should not fear such things. Rather, we should
focus more on life and seize every one of its moments. We
should live our life to the fullest by making ourselves happy
and doing things that give us the sense of fulfillment. So
that, when we reach the end chapter of our lives, we would
not regret anything.
