The spirit of ghost haunts “The In Between,” a romance about two high school students

whose love affair is tragically cut short, including a cameo by the poster for the 1990 blockbuster
which starred Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. This time, the star-crossed lovers are teenagers
— Tessa (Joey King) and Skylar (Kyle Allen) — who are involved in a car accident in the
movie’s first scene. Skyler is killed and Tessa is hospitalized with a critical injury to her heart.
This movie employs a split timeline narrative, seamlessly shifting between the past and the
present. The story unfolds by recounting the blossoming love between Tessa and Skylar, while
also delving into the present-day experiences of a grieving Tessa, who believes that her late
boyfriend is attempting to reach out to her from the afterlife.

Their first meeting takes place during a revival screening of Jean-Jacques Beneix's
passionate 1986 film, "Betty Blue." In a theater empty except for the two of them (a result of the
COVID pandemic during filming), Tessa expresses her frustration with the lack of subtitles in the
French-language movie. Skylar, ever the gentleman, sits beside her and proceeds to translate
every line of dialogue. As the film progresses, their connection deepens, culminating in a tender
moment of hand-holding. Tessa, an orphan who guards her emotions and maintains a distance
from her adoptive parents, finds solace in her budding photography skills. Through the lens of
her camera, she keeps the world at arm's length. However, her defenses crumble in the presence
of Skylar, a charming and well-mannered young man who impresses her with his fluency in three
languages, his literary knowledge of Wharton and Austen, and his involvement in the school's
rowing team. As if that weren't enough, he also happens to be a lifeguard, making him the
epitome of a perfect boyfriend for Tessa.

Simultaneously, in the present-day timeline, Tessa begins to receive mysterious messages

that suggest Skylar is attempting to communicate with her from beyond the grave. Photos she
never took mysteriously appear and vanish in her darkroom. The song "Never Tear Us Apart" by
INXS, a favorite of Tessa and Skylar, unexpectedly plays on her cellphone during class. In her
dreams, Skylar appears and utters the words, "I'm still here." Yet, Tessa is left wondering what
his intentions are and how she can establish a means of communication with him so their love
story can have the ending it deserves.

Personally, I do believe in the existence of God for I have proven it in some point of my
life. With every cruel thing that is happening in humanity nowadays, many have doubts whether
God really exist or not. Some people have this kind of question, “If he’s real, why is this
happening to us?” or “Why did God let this happen to me?” whenever they experience hardship.
We question His existence. Well, I do understand where they are coming, because at some point
of my life I also had the same question when my dad left us. But after some time and thoughts, I
have realized that this is His way on leading me to much better state and path in life. I’ve learned
that no matter how hard and messy life can get, we should not doubt him. Instead, we should
always trust His ways no matter what because he would never make things happen if it’s not for
the betterment of us and our life.

Another reason why I believe in His existence is because of the life that He gave us. All
the wonderful things I got to own, memorable experience I got to live on, and people I got to be
with in this lifetime. I believe that this is all His will, and I am more than grateful to live this life
he had given me and give meaning to it.

Speaking of life, do you believe that life has meaning? What does life mean to you?
Everyone in this world has wondered that. To some, it may just mean showing up for work each
day and taking care of oneself. Others might say that life is a significant period of time spent
caring for and nurturing the people you love during your time on Earth. Both perspectives are
valid for me because I believe that life meaning depends on our own experiences and how we
choose to live every day. Life has no meaning if you don't have the urge to wake up the next
morning to see the next day. Many people live their lives unhappy since they have no purpose or
meaning to fulfill or satisfy their needs. Purpose to me is something to live for and something to
look forward to in life. Without purpose and meaning in life there is no point of living at all.

Just like in the movie “The In Between”, the main character, Tessa felt that her life has
lost its meaning when her boyfriend died. In this, we can see that Tessa’s meaning of life is
having a purpose to live. And for her, her life purpose is to be with the person that she loves.
That’s why when that person died, her purpose to live also fade away. As the movie goes on, we
later found out that her dead boyfriend was trying to connect with her from the what they called
‘in between’, a place between life and death. It was soon revealed that her boyfriend wants them
to meet in the ‘in between’ to give their love story a closure they deserve, which soon Tessa
granted by seeking him in places they had their strongest moments.
After reuniting with her deceased boyfriend and spending their final moments together,
Tessa then decided to leave the in between and go back to life. She slowly accepts the death of
her boyfriend and consider their meeting in the in between as their closure. Because of this
happening, Tessa finally gets back her purpose in life, and that is to continue live not just for the
people she loves, but also for herself.
