WHY THERE IS A NEED FOR US TO LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF FOOD

SECURITY IN AN ECOSYSTEM AND WHAT CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO IMPROVE
THIS FOOD SECURITY SYSTEM IN OUR OWN COUNTRY.

Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and

economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs

and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Understanding the importance of

food security in the ecosystem brings awareness to everyone that food is essential and

it should not be wasted. Access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food is a basic need

and should be treated as a human right, with priority given to the most vulnerable. The

lack of it could cause adverse health effects such as malnutrition, one of the leading

problems that affect Filipinos today. Learning food security provides opportunity to

everyone to enhance food productivity such as home economics programs and other

income generating activities in the community, as this also affiliated to our economic

and agrarian government agencies.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, these are the following that can

be done to improve food security:

 Training small farmers and foreign officials on plant and animal health systems,
risk analysis, and avoiding post-harvest loss;
 Completing assessments on climate change;
 Increasing agricultural productivity.
However in our simple ways, we can also contribute to improve food security in our
homes and community such as:

a. Reduce our food waste

b. Maintain and manage food we spend.

c. Practice backyard gardening

d. Engage in community projects and activities concerning and improving food

security

e. Work towards defeating climate change as this also contributes to food

source productivity

The Philippine government also needs to improve our local trade policies so that

no food is put into wastage and local farmers could gain the hard work they toil in

farming. Existing infrastructural programs and machineries also need to be improved.

Agencies need to conduct more trainings and create valuable programs for the farmers

to close the yield gap in farming to better identify the most important crop, and soil and

management factors limiting current farm yields and improved farming practices.
