LATEST NEWS on COVID-19 in B.C.

Health officials share latest figures on COVID-19 in B.C.
COVID-19 modelling released by the British Columbia government shows challenging days ahead for
the health-care system even though the latest wave propelled by the Omicron variant may have
peaked in parts of the province.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Friday the wave has spread faster than previous ones
and their research shows the top of the latest surge was likely reached last weekend.

However, the data also shows hospital admissions are expected to peak in the next week with a lag

The figures showed a decrease in infections in two health authorities, Vancouver Coastal and Fraser
Health, with a levelling off on Vancouver Island and a slight rise in the Interior.

Officials looked at various indicators including hospitalizations and testing for COVID-19 in
wastewater to support the data.

B.C. modelling shows Omicron wave of virus transmission on a

downward trajectory
Despite a rapid spike in COVID-19 cases in B.C., transmission during this Omicron variant wave is
likely on a downward trajectory, according to the province’s latest epidemiological modelling Friday.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW

The peak of transmission in most health regions may have occurred last week, the data show, but
there continues to be a high number of new cases. The peak for the admissions to hospital is expected
in the next week or two, and then it will probably be another two weeks before those hospitalization
rates start to decline.

At a news conference Friday, Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, said the next couple
of weeks are going to be the most challenging on B.C.’s health care system.

In the past week, there were 17,515 new cases, including 580 hospitalizations and 32 deaths. To date,
there have been 291,246 cases, 13,768 hospitalized and 2,462 deaths from COVID-19.

Also, the data show hospitalizations for people over 70 have gone up during this Omicron surge,
which is concerning for health officials who are trying to understand the reason for the increase. Even

The highest number of people hospitalized and those in ICU continues to be among those who are
unvaccinated across the age spectrum.

Modelling shows 63 per cent of those who died from between Dec. 11 and Jan. 10 were unvaccinated
compare with 19 per cent who had two doses of vaccine and 14 per cent with three.

Active cases drop to just over 36,000 with 2,554 new cases
reported
The active COVID-19 case count in B.C. has dropped to about 36,049 despite another 2,554 cases
being reported Thursday. Active cases in the new year had peaked a day earlier at 36,641.

Hospitalizations are still climbing to record levels with 534 people now in hospital, 34 more than
yesterday, including 102 in intensive care. (The number in ICU remained unchanged.)

Pregnant people now eligible for vaccine booster shots

B.C. residents who are pregnant can now book a COVID-19 booster vaccine if it’s been eight weeks or
more since their second dose.

“While it is recommended people get their booster six months after their second dose to ensure
longer-lasting protection, it is important for pregnant people to receive their booster during
pregnancy to ensure optimal protection for them and their baby,” said the Ministry of Health in a
statement Thursday.

Cancelled surgeries, long waits for tests and lack of data lead
to calls for action
Pemberton resident Valerie Butters and her family have been living with the effects of COVID-19 for
more than a year. None has the virus, but their lives have been turned upside-down because the
pandemic has delayed access to medical treatment.

Butters isn’t alone. A just-released survey of 188,000 residents by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control
reports one-in-three respondents found it harder to access health care during spring 2021 than in the
first year of the pandemic, where one-in-five found it a challenge. The survey shows 40 per cent of
those affected said their health has worsened, either significantly or somewhat, as a result. And it
shows that’s having an effect on mental health as well.

Ronald McDonald House says it will evict no one, despite new

vaccine rule
Ronald McDonald House has denied that a change in its vaccination policy meant an unvaccinated
family would be evicted from the house run by the charity for sick kids and their families.

Earlier this week, the Kelowna father of a four-year-old, who is staying at the facility while being
treated for leukemia, posted a video on social media showing him confronting an administrator about
the change in policy. The family’s story was picked up by media around the world.

The charity responded with a statement on Thursday confirming that most children over age five and
their families need proof of vaccination as of Jan. 31, the end of a two-week grace period for the
change, but said: “No family will ever be evicted from our house.”

The statement also said, “Our team has been in contact with the family in regards to this specific
situation, and we are supporting arrangements for (alternative) accommodations.”

B.C. gyms, bars, lounges ordered closed can apply for relief
grants
Businesses ordered to close last month because of public health measures in British Columbia to limit
the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19 Omicron variant can now apply for provincial relief
grants of up to $10,000.

More than 3,000 business operators could apply for the $10-million relief grant program, which
provides between $1,000 and $10,000 to individual businesses based on the number of staff at the
time of closure, Economic Recovery Minister Ravi Kahlon said Wednesday.
