TO DETERMINE % PURITY OF THE GIVEN SAMPLE OF VITAMIN C

TABLETS BY TITRIMETRIC METHOD.

APPARATUS:
 Burette

 Pipette

 Titration flask

 Beaker

 Cylinder

 Stand

 Funnel

 Dropper

CHEMICALS REQUIRED:
 Given sample of Vitamin C tablets

 0.1 N Ceric Ammonium Sulphate solution

 Ferroin indicator

 Distilled water

PRINCIPLE:
Oxidation reduction Titration

ANALYTE / TITRAND/ SAMPLE:

Vitamin C tablets

POTENCY:
Vitamin C 500 mg / tablet

STANDARD SOLUTION /TITRANT:

0.1N Ceric Ammonium Sulphate solution

INDICATOR:
Ferroin Complex
END POINT:
Pale blue colour

FACTOR:
Each ml of 0.1 N Ceric Ammonium Sulphate is equivalent to 8.806 mg of vitamin C

LIMITS:
95% - 105%

THEORY:
Oxi Red (Redox) Titrations:

The reactions which involve a change in the oxidation states of reactants are known as redox
reactions.

Oxidation:

• Addition of oxygen

• Removal of hydrogen

• Loss of electron

Reduction:

• Addition of hydrogen

• Gain of electron

• Removal of oxygen

Oxidizing agent:

The substance which gains electrons and gets itself reduced is known as oxidizing agent.

Reducing agent:

The substance which loses electrons and gets itself oxidized is known as reducing agent.

Vitamin C :

It Is Used As
• as an antioxidant

• in the treatment of scurvy

PROCEDURE:
1. Wash, clean and dry all the glassware.

2. Prepare 0.1N ceric ammonium sulphate as follows: 66gm of ceric ammonium sulphate
was dissolved in a mixture of 30 ml of sulphuric acid and 500 ml of water. The mixture
was cooled and filtered. The resulting solution was diluted to 1000ml with water.

3. Prepare stock solution by dissolving 1 tablets (500mg) of vitamin C in q.s distilled water
to make volume up to 100ml.

4. Take 5ml from the stock solution in a titration flask and add 15-20ml of distilled water in
it.

5. Add 1-2 drops of indicator in it.

6. Take 0.1 N Ceric Ammonium Sulphate solution in a burette.

7. Titrate the contents of the flask against 0.1 N Ceric Ammonium Sulphate solution until
pale blue colour appears.

8. Note the burette reading and calculate volume used.

9. Determine % purity by

% purity = determined amount X 100

stated amount

OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS:

S.No. Initial Final volume Actual Volume
volume V2 Used
V1 (ml) V= V2-V1
(ml) (ml)

1.

2.

Mean volume:

V = _____+______+_____

= -----A------- ml

Determined Amount:

A ml of sample solution = Volume X Factor

= x 8.806 mg of vitamin C

= ----B-------- mg of vitamin C

Stated Amount:

100ml of sample solution = 500mg of vitamin C

5ml --------------------------- = 500 / 100 X 5

= 25 mg

% purity:

% purity = Determined amount X 100

Stated amount

= ____B_____ x 100

25

= ---------%
PRECAUTIONS:
1. All the apparatus should be clean.

2. Grind tablets to a very fine powder form.

3. Take at least 3 readings and calculate mean volume.

4. Rinse the burette and pipette with the respective solutions.

5. Fix burette vertically in the stand.

6. Remove all air bubbles from burette and pipette for exact volume measurement.

7. Avoid mouth pipetting.

8. Use indicator in small amount.

RESULT:
 As the % purity of the given sample of vitamin C is -------% that lies within the official
limits (95% - 105%) so, the provided sample is of standard quality.
