How can I use this with my children?

Use this activity to support your child’s

in relation to breathing and the job of
our lungs.

How does this help my children’s learning?

Children are naturally curious about their

bodies and how things work. This practical,
hands-on activity is perfect for helping
them to see exactly what happens when
they breathe in oxygen.

Ideas for further learning:

If your child enjoys learning about lungs,

why not find out about other parts of the
body such as how our skeletons move or
why our hearts beat?
Lung Model
Use this fun craft activity to support your child’s understanding of how their body works in relation
to breathing and the job of our lungs.

You will need:

• Lungs, Mouth and Nose Templates
(printed or stuck onto card)
• scissors
• 2 bendy straws
• double-sided sticky tape
• sticky tape
• 2 small sandwich bags

Method:
1. Print and cut out the templates for the lungs, mouth and nose. These need to be printed either straight
onto card or on paper that is stuck onto card. You can choose the black and white version to colour in
or print off our full colour version if you prefer.

2. Secure the two straws together using a small piece of tape around the long length of the straws;
ensure that the shorter parts of the straws are sticking out on opposite sides to create an upside
down ‘T’ shape.

3. Attach your nose and lips to the top of the straws using double-sided sticky tape, leaving a centimeter
of straw above the nose so that there is space to blow into the straws.

4. Stick the lung template at the bottom of the straws using double-sided sticky tape so that the two
bendy parts that make the ‘T’ shape each lead into a lung.

5. Attach a sandwich bag to the end of each straw, wrapping sticky tape around the bag securely so no
air escapes. These should rest on top of the lung templates.

6.
