How can I use this with my children?

With the help of this craft activity, you

Parent Guide
and your child can create an edible, visual
representation of the arteries, veins and
red blood cells.

How does this help my children’s learning?

The jelly circulatory system will help your

child to understand how the red blood cells
move around animals’ bodies and what
they carry around to the cells and muscles.

Ideas for further learning:

Can your child create flag labels for their

jelly model? Can they label the veins,
arteries, red blood cells, oxygen and
carbon dioxide?
Jelly Circulatory
System Model
You will need:
• jelly powder or ready-
made jelly (red)
• strawberry fizzy belts
• strawberry pencils
• a peach
• blueberries
• bon bons

Method
1. If you are using ready-made jelly, transfer the jelly into a clear bowl. If you
are using a jelly powder, follow the instructions on the packet and make
enough red jelly to fill a clear bowl.

2. Place down two of the strawberry fizzy belts, end to end, onto the surface
of the jelly. This will form a long strip that represents the artery.

3. Next to this, place down two strawberry pencils, end to end, onto the
surface of the jelly. This will form a long strip that represents the vein.

4. Carefully, cut a peach in half. Be careful when cutting the peach, as the
stone can make it difficult to slice. Scoop out the stone.

5. Place one half of the peach at the end of the strawberry belt artery and
the other half at the end of the strawberry pencil vein to represent the red
blood cells.

6. Inside the peach that is at the end of the artery, place three blueberries to
represent the oxygen being carried by the red blood cell.

7. Inside the peach that is at the end of the vein, place three bon bons to
represent the carbon dioxide being carried by the red blood cell.
