Learning Sequence
What’s It Like In …? Children explore the French Cities Photo Pack of France’s 10 largest cities. They describe
what they see (in English) and compare or contrast with their own town or places they know in their country.
Feedback comparisons and contrasts to the rest of the class.

C’est où ça? [Where’s That?] Using the Lesson Presentation, introduce the names and show locations of the
cities (if time allows, use Google Earth or Google Maps to ‘fly’ into each place, looking at further street views of
the cities). Encourage good listening and careful repetition of the names.

Écoutez bien! [Listen Up!] Did they hear any familiar or repeated sound patterns and see any familiar spellings in
the city names? (e.g. the ‘ohn’ sound in Montpellier and Lyon is the same as in Bonjour; the‘oo’ in Toulouse can
be heard in Asseyez-vous) Give out Letter String Word Fans. As a class, practise saying each example word, so
children can identify the key letter string sound. Select a Sound Match Vocabulary Card and say the word out
loud. A sound file is provided for each word in the Lesson Pack. Children listen and repeat, then show what they
hear using one of the letter strings on their word fan.

Où habites-tu? [Where Do You Live?] Children listen to the characters on the Lesson Presentation answer
the question Où habites-tu? What do they think is being said? How do they know? (Can they link the question
intonation and city name answer to a relevant conversation?) Teach and drill the question. Allow children to
answer around the question using their own town for the answer.

J’habite à … [I Live In …] Each child takes a picture card from the French Cities Photo Packs. They move around
the class, greeting each other and asking Où habites-tu? Children answer the question with whatever city is on
their picture card, then swap cards and find another partner.

Allow children to keep the same picture for Encourage the more able children to have
2-3 turns, so they can practise pronouncing miniconversations, e.g. Bonjour Isabella!
the name accurately. Ça va? Où habites-tu?...Salut Marcus.
Oui, ça va bien merci. Moi, j’habite à
Strasbourg. Et toi?

Review: Choose a city from the French City Name Cards. Say to the class J’habite à ____. Ask for a volunteer
with a picture from that town to hold it up and say something about what it shows.

Taskit
Researchit: Find out about another city or town in a different French-speaking country (such as Senegal, Madagascar or Belgium) and
make a poster all about it. Where in the world is it? How many people live there? What is the countryside or landscape like? Is
the town famous for anything in particular?
Mapit: Make a class map of where the largest French cities (or others, perhaps a partner school) are in France for your display.
Personaliseit: Use our lovely tool Twinkl Create to make local photo cards for parts of your town or region. Children match them up and ask/
answer the target question about their home town.

Language Notes:
• The same phrase J’habite à… can be used for the city/town or areas in a town. E.g. J’habite à Sheffield. J’habite à Woodseats. If you wish
to say ‘I live in England’, the preposition changes to en: J’habite en Angleterre.
• In the Sound Match Vocabulary Card resource, all the words are taken from previous units in the Y3 Planit French scheme and so should
be fairly familiar.
