Managers and Management

• A manager is a person who plans, organizes,
directs and controls the allocation of human,
material, financial, and information resources in
following of the organization’s goals.
Managers: Individuals who achieve goals through
other people.
• Management refers to the tasks and activities
involved in directing an organization or one of its
units: planning, organizing, leading, and
controlling.

Meaning of “Management”
Management has different meaning
 Management is a process
 Management is a discipline
 Management is a human activity
 Management is a career

What is an Organization?
A coordinated social unit, composed of a
group of people, which functions on a
relatively continuous basis to achieve a
common goal or set of goals.

Characteristics of an Organization
 An organization has a structure.

 An organization consists of a group of
people striving to reach goals that
individuals acting alone could not achieve.

Provides a set of tools that allow:

BEHAVIOUR
A. Organizations are collections of people who work together and
coordinate their actions to achieve a wide variety of goals or desired
future outcomes.
B. Management is the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling
of human and other resources to achieve organizational goals
effectively and efficiently.
C. Organizational performance is how efficiently and effectively
managers use resources to satisfy customers and achieve
organizational goals.
D. Efficiency is a measure of how well resources are used to achieve
a goal (productively).
E. Effectiveness is a measure of the appropriateness of the goals
selected by managers to pursue.

Planning
Controlling Organizing
Leading

Planning
Process of identifying and selecting appropriate
organizational goals and courses of action.
Steps in the Planning Process
• Deciding which goals the organization will follow
up.
• Deciding what courses of action to adopt to attain
those goals.
• Deciding how to allocate organizational resources.
• Strategy to adopt is not always immediately clear.

Organizing
• Involves grouping people into departments
according to the kinds of job-specific tasks they
perform
• Managers layout lines of authority and
responsibility
• Decide how to coordinate organizational
resources

Leading
• Present a clear organizational vision for its
members to accomplish, and energize and enable
employees so that everyone understands the part
they play in achieving organizational goals.
• Leadership involves using power, personality, and

influence, persuasion, and communication skills.
• Outcome of leadership is highly motivated and

committed workforce.

Controlling
• Task of managers is to evaluate how well
an organization has achieved its goals and
to take any corrective actions needed to
maintain or improve performance.
• The outcome of the control process is the

ability to measure performance accurately
and regulate organizational efficiency and
effectiveness.
