The number of people using bikes as main transport mode is decreasing.

Do the
advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Bicycle utilisation as a principal means of transportation is declining tremendously. I believe that

the disadvantages outweigh the disadvantages of this trend, and this essay will provide supporting
arguments for my view.
Arguably, one advantage of relinquishing pedal-driven recreational vehicles as principal short-
distances transit method is the renouncing of dedicated bike lanes from streets, which could be used
for public transportation or personal cars. For example, in Bucharest bicycle lanes have been
morphed into isolated lanes for public transportation, due to their low utilisation by cyclists.
Turning to drawbacks, this development have catastrophic effect on local traffic, as often
individuals would replace their bicycles with their personal vehicles, or use local transit solutions.
This would inevitably result in stressful traffic jams, accidents, and over-crowded buses or trams.
For example, in Moscow, as the number of cyclists dropped over the past years, the amount of
combustion propelled vehicles exceeds the streets capacities.
Another minus to be considered would be the impact on the environment. Bicycle use is advertised
as an environment-friendly alternative to the conventional and polluting cars. Decreasing the usage
of ecological means of transportation would aggravate the carbon footprint on Earth. For example,
the absence of dedicated bicycle lanes in Iasi has turned the city into the first most polluted urban
area in Eastern Europe.
To sum up, although this movement would contribute to larger streets, I think that the
inconveniences are of greater concern.
