Selected Repertoire for the
High School Choral Ensemble

This is the third in a series of articles based on re-
search that studied recommended literature for the
high school choral ensemble. The first article, "A Study
of Five Recommended Usts of Repertoire for the High
School Choral Ensemble," published in the Fall 1988
UPDATE, reported those composers that were most
often represented on five recommended lists of choral
literature and determined which of those composers
were considered of sufficient Importance to be includ-
ed in two standard music appreciation textbooks, a
music history text and a choralllterature textbook.
The second article, -High School Choral Literature
Selection, Composers, Genres and Country of Origin"
(Spring 1989 UPDA1E), reported the results of a sur-
vey of leading university methods professors and the
ACDA High School Committee for Repertoire and
Standards (High School Directors). The participants
were asked to respond on a Likert scale, reporting
their opinions concerning the selection of repertoire
for high school choral ensembles.
The following list of recommended choral literature
for high school choral ensemble consists of repertoire
that:
1. Is by a composer who had four or more works
appearing in the lists.
2. Is by a composer represented in all four of the
textbooks.
3. Represents composers or genres receiving a
rating in the "agree" to "strongly agree" cate-
gories, as shown in Table 1 (p. 8) of the Wyatt
article published in the Spring 1989 UPDATE.

All of the genres listed in Table 1 are included in
the list except the music of William Billings. He did
not meet criterion #3. Although he was ranked in the
"strongly agree" category by both university and high
school participants, had eleven works on the recom-
mended lists, and was included in the two music ap-
preciation textbooks, he was not listed in the music
history or choral literature textbooks. His composi-
tions are listed below in the order that all genres in
Table 1 (Spring 1989 UPDATE) are included in the
list.

 There were approximately 40 composers who were
mentioned in two or three of the textbooks and whose
music is of the genres listed in Table 1. Since this
group represents almost 300 additional titles, it Is Im-
possible to include their works in this article.
Conclusions
The list of literature in this article represents ap-
proximately 400 selections by composers whose
works are considered to be of Importance in the field
of music. Leading university methods professors and
high school choral directors place their work in a cat-
egory of "strongly agree" that compositions by these
composers should be Included in a high school choral
curriculum. The recommended 11sts from which the
works were chosen were compiled by practicing
choral directors at the high school level. Therefore,
the selections should be considered accessible to high
school ensembles. While there Is certainly a wide
choice of literature available in the 11st, perhaps the
most important finding of the series of studies is the
type of literature, composers, genres, texts, and com-
positional styles represented.
The complete list used In the series of studies rep-
resents over 1,700 titles.' Many outstanding composi-
tions are included that were eliminated from the list
in this article because the composer may not have
had multiple compositions in the list, was not listed
in the textbooks, or did not receive a high priority In
the ratings of the methods professors or high school
directors. Certainly these works have validity for in-
clusion in the high school curriculum.
