BE - SEMESTER–V (OLD) EXAMINATION – WINTER 2021
Subject Code:150604 Date:27/12/2021
Subject Name:Geotechnical Engineering - I
Time:02:30 PM TO 05:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Simple and non-programmable scientific calculators are allowed.

Q.1 (a) Explain “Geological Cycle” and type of soil based on its formation. 07
(b) Discuss the applications of geotechnical engineering with suitable examples. 07
Q.2 (a) Define: 07
(i) Air content, (ii) Porosity, (iii) Degree of saturation, (iv) water content, (v)
Dry density, (vi) Bulk density, and (vii) Submerged density.
(b) Define specific gravity and void ratio and Derive relation between bulk density, 07
specific gravity, Degree of saturation, void ratio and density of water.
OR
(b) A sample of wet soil has a weight of 360 N and a volume of 0.019 m3. Upon 07
drying out the soil in an oven its weight reduces to 315 N. Calculate (a) Bulk
unit weight, (b) Water content, (c) Void ratio, (d) Porosity, (e) Degree of
saturation and (f) Dry unit weight. Take specific gravity of soil equal to 2.65
and unit weight of water equal to 9.18 KN/m3.
Q.3 (a) Explain laboratory method to find out liquid limit and plastic limit of the given 07
soil sample.
(b) Define the term ‘Soil Structure’ and briefly explain the commonly observed soil 07
structures.
OR
Q.3 (a) Describe I.S. Classification system for soil. 07
(b) A deposit of sand 10 m thick overlies a bed of soft clay. The ground table is 3 m 07
below the ground surface. If the sand above the ground water table has a degree
of saturation 40%, plot the diagram showing the variation of the total stress,
neutral stress and effective stress. Take G = 2.65 and e = 0.70.
Q.4 (a) Enlist and explain factors affecting Permeability. 07
(b) What are the different methods of compaction adopted in the field? How would 07
you select the type of roller to be used?
OR
Q.4 (a) Explain factors affecting compaction of soil. 07

1
(b) A permeameter of 80 mm diameter with a sample of 300 mm has been used for 07
constant head and falling head tests. While conducting a constant head test the
loss of head was 1150 mm for a length of 250 mm and the rate of flow was
2700 mm3/sec. find the coefficient of permeability.
If a falling head test was then performed on the same sample at the
same void ratio, find the time taken for the head to fall from 900 mm to 450
mm. The diameter of stand pipe in the falling head was 25 mm.
Q.5 (a) Discuss the spring analogy for primary consolidation. What are its uses? 07
(b) An unconfined compression test was conducted on an undisturbed clay sample. 07
The sample had a diameter of 38 mm and length 76 mm. The load at failure was
30 N and axial compression of the sample was 11 mm. Determine the undrained
shear strength, if the failure plane makes an angle 50o with horizontal.
OR
Q.5 (a) Describe Mohr-Coulomb’s strength theory. Also, draw coulomb’s failure 07
envelop for C – soil, Ø – soil and C - Ø soil.
(b) A 30 mm thick Oedometer sample of clay reached 30% consolidation in 15 07
minutes with drainage at top and bottom. How long would it take the clay layer
from which this sample was obtained to reach 60% consolidation? The clay
layer had one way drainage and was 6 m thick.
