A Movie Review “Matilda”

The main character in Matilda, a 1966 family movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel,
is Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a little girl with an incredible talent and a bright mind.
Her father, Henry (Danny DeVito who also directs the movie) is an unscrupulous used car
salesman. Her mother, Zinnia (Rhea Perlman), spends everyday playing bingo. Matilda learns
to take care of herself and visits the library to read on survival skills.

After some hesitations, her father finally allows her to go to school. Harry plots with
Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), the oppressive principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary School
where kids feel they are in prison. Matilda’s spirits sag on knowing the principles hates all
kids. Fortunately, Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Davitz) recognizes her exeptional
abilities and becomes her loyal friend. Matilda stands up for the Principal’s victims, thus
becoming the children’s heroine.

The principle shows many cartoonish violence. The children who displease the
principal are put in ‘the chokey’, a dark closet lined with nails and broken glass. In other
occasion, she also picks a girl up by her pigtails and fling her over a fence, forces a boy to eat
a gigantic chocolate cake in front of his classmates and having the empty plate smashed on
his head.

I think I have learnt many beautiful things in this movie. Matilda has shown a great
friendship toward her friends and teacher. She manages to beat the cruel principal and does
not show any afraid when she enters the principal’s house to get things for her teacher.

She also a full of laughter kid while her parents are not so supportive to every thing she does.
You should try to watch this movie when you need some laugh and ‘Matilda’ would bring you
on track.
