APPLIED MATHEMATICS IIIB ASSIGNMENT

Instruction: Do the following assignment by showing all the necessary steps clearly and
neatly forming groups where a group can have member of 5 or 6 students
Submission Date : September 13/2021

1. A tank contains a salt water solution consisting initially of 20 kg of salt dissolved into 10 liter of
water. Fresh water is being poured into the tank at a rate of 3 liter/min and the solution
(kept uniform by stirring) is flowing out at 2 liter/min. Find the amount of salt in the tank after
5 minutes and draw also the plot of the amount of salt Q(t) in the tank as time t moves on.

dQ
{ use  ( rate at which salt is leaving) }
dt

2. The figure below shows an electromotive force E (supplied by a battery or generator), a resistor
R, an inductor L, and a capacitor C, in series. If the charge on the capacitor at time t is Q=Q(t) ,
then the current is the rate of change of Q with respect to t i.e I = dQ/dt .
Kirchhoff’s voltage law says that the sum of voltage drops is equal to the supplied voltage:

d 2Q dQ 1
L R  Q  E (t )
dt 2
dt C .
Voltages Drop  Supplied Voltages
Find the charge and current at time t in the circuit if R =40 ohm, L=1Henry, C= 16x 10-4Farad,
E(t) = 100cos(10t) volt and take the initial charge and the current to be zero.

3. Use LAPLACE TRANSFORM to solve the differential equation 4
  4 y  0 with initial
dx
condition y (0)  1, y / (0)  y / (0)  0 for constant  value?

4. Suppose an Air force jet is flying at an altitude of 30,000feet above sea level encounters a fault
in the air and is about to crash and the pilot decides to jump off from the emergency exit with a
velocity of 150 feet/sec and at an angle of 450 above the horizontal . (Assuming there is failure
in the parachute and no air resistance, g=32 feet/sec2 ),

a) How long the pilot will be airborne( the pilot time of flight)
b) Determine whether the pilot lands on the island or falls into the river where the island was
located at an assume distance of 5000 feet( the horizontal distance travelled by the pilot)
c) The pilot final velocity at impact?
d) The vertical distance travelled (maximum height) by the pilot.

Note: Neglecting air resistance, the path of a projectile launched from an initial height h with
Initial speed vo and an angle of elevation θ is described by the vector function

r (t )  (v0 cos )ti  [h  (v0 sin )t  0.5gt 2 ] j where g is the acceleration due to gravity

5. Find the Laplace transform of f (t )  and evaluate (e t cos t  e t )dt
