FOREWORD
This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by Electrical Energy
Storage Systems Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council.
This standard specifies the safety and functional requirements of Battery Management System (BMS) used in
Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS).
The BMS plays an important role for the health, effective usage and maintenance of batteries. BMS is significant
to identify and to avoid battery failures. It also plays an important role in ongoing maintenance in unmanned
remote locations of EESS.
This standard is a guide for all the users involved in design and development of EESS and primarily focuses on
the aspect of safety, protection mechanism of cells, imbalance of cells, testing and communication.
Considerable assistance has been obtained from UL-2271, UL2580, UL1973, IEC 61508 in preparation of this
standard.
The composition of the Committee, responsible for the formulation of this standard is given at Annex B.
