Group Technology
Group technology (GT) is a principle used inmanufacturing, in which the parts having similarities aregrouped together
All the similar parts are grouped into part families and consists of similar characteristics. parts proCessedin
Therefore, the are a
similar way resulting in the improved effñciency of manufacturing process. This also helps in ncreasing
reducingsetup times,
tool control, better scheduling, etc. It facilitates the work flow and parts handling byarranging the machines into cells or
groups.

There are many advantages of Giroup technology in the
ollowing arcas,

Product Design
The combination of parts classification and coding
system with the computerized design retrieval system
helps in improving the product design. The required part
figure can be retrieved by designer, by entering the part
code, when a new part design is needed. It consumes
less time to search the design files by using the coding
system. If the accurate design of the part is not found, the
required function is satisfied by making small changes
in the existing design. Also, GT helps in promoting the
standardization of design features like chamfers, corner
radii and tolerances, which results in the eduction of
number of drawings.
Tooling and Setups
This technology helps in standardization of mainly two
areas of manufacturing i.e., tooling and setups. In case
oftooling, jigs and fixtures are designed in groups which
helps in holding each and every part in the part family.
This is done by using special adapters in the workholding
devices. In case of setups, most of the setup time is
reduced, due to the use of similar parts processed on
them.
3. Materials Handling
The machine layouts of GT enables and effective
material flow, which helps in reducing the moving time
and waiting time of the components.
4. Production and Inventory Control
As the equipment is grouped into cells, it helps in
reducing the number of production centers, as a result,
production scheduling is simplified. It also reduces the
complexity of work flow, setup times, production lead
times work - in process and delay in the process.
5.
. Employee Satisfaction
It enhances the attitude of workers, as level of job
satisfaction increases to a great extent. t also improves
the workpart quality, which is taken care by the worker.

6. Process Planning Procedures
