Virtual Worlds, Real Bodies Course Preparation



Preparations after Class Starts on Jan 19, 2022 Wed

1. We will be using ZOOM as the lecture and tutorial platform, please install Zoom on
your laptop or home desktop, Mac or PC version. Lecture link can be obtained at the
HKU MOODLE learning platform at upper right button. Clicking will direct you to
using the Zoom app installed.
2. For 3D modeling we are using SketchUp Pro. A 30 days trial version is available for
download to PC or Mac: https://www.sketchup.com/try-sketchup#for-higher-
education. Please sign up and download and install. Copy of SketchUp Make will be
made available with links on Moodle.





3. For game engine we are using Unity3D. Download the UnityHubSetup app from
Unity.com as first time user and register accordingly. From the Hub you will look for
Unity Version 2018.4.6f1 from the download archive link. Install the version within
the Hub.






NOTE: Laptop or hardware for SketchUp, Unity and TwinMotion can be Mac or PC. At least
Core i5 or Core i7. Dedicated Computer graphic card on laptop or desktop is preferred.
Macbook Air or thin PC laptop will be borderline in performance. Please join consult your
group for capable machine.


4. For project visualization we use TwinMotion from the Unreal Engine. Go to Unreal
Engine.com and download the Epic Launcher to register and select EDU version.



5. Editing Software on Mac such as iMovie [comes with machine] or Da Vinci Resolve
17 can be had for free. For the PC equivalent will be Da Vince 17 or Video Editor in
Win 10. Student will less capable machines may consider taking up the role of editor,
presenter and research or even programmer in the group project credits and
contribution requirement.

6. Unreal Engine is optional if students would like to try the latest version 4.27 or the
New Unreal 5, even the MetaHuman creator if computer hardware fulfill basic
requirements. These will be discussed in introduced during Demo 2.



7. To import SketchUp models into Unreal Engine, a plug-in called Datasmith has to be
installed to your copy of SketchUp and Unreal Engine, please find details on Unreal
website for details.

NOTE on Hardware Requirement: If you computer and laptop at home is sluggish in using
the above software, such a graphic card not as powerful as you want, please contact your
TA for available workstations with VR head mount display at the Haking Wong 1-7 Lab.
There are 3 workstations available for use on your assignments and group project testings.
