Problem 1. A volumetric reservoir, i.e. one with no associated gascap or active aquifer, is producing oil at a
pressure above its bubble point. The following reservoir data is available:

𝑃𝑖 4500 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎
β𝑜𝑖 1.574
𝑃𝑏𝑝 3650 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎
β𝑜 @ 𝑃𝑏𝑝 1.592
𝐶𝑤 0.000003 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 −1
𝐶𝑓 0.000008 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 −1
𝑆𝑤𝑐 0.22

If a total 850,000 STB medium volatility oil has been produced from the field, since the start of production
to the bubble-point pressure, then use the material balance equation, togather with the available pressure-
production data to estimate the active STOIIP (N).

Based on this estimated STOIIP calculate the recovery factor RF , as the reservoir depletes volumetrically
from the start of production to the bubble-point pressure.

Solution:

Step 1. The following is the particular MBE for Volumetric Undersaturated Oil Reservoir:

𝑁𝑃 β𝑜 + 𝑅𝑃 + 𝑅𝑠𝑜 β𝑔 = N (β𝑜 −β𝑜𝑖 ) + (𝑅𝑠𝑜𝑖 − 𝑅𝑠𝑜 )β𝑔

Step 2. The reservoir is above the bubble-point (Volumetric = neglecting the water & rock compressibility):

𝑁𝑃 β𝑜@𝑏𝑝 850,000 × 1.592

𝑁= =
β𝑜@𝑏𝑝 − β𝑜𝑖 1.592 − 1.574

𝑁= 75.18 𝑀𝑀𝑆𝑡𝑏

Step 3. Calculating the recovery factor:

𝑁𝑃
𝑅𝐹 =
𝑁

𝑅𝐹 = 1.13 %
