Problem 1. A reservoir, initial pressure 2,800 psia, is being produced by a gascap drive mechanism. From the
geology no water influx into the reservoir is expected. The size of the gascap is well known - from log and core
data take m = 0.20.

Initially, at 2,800 psia, the oil in the reservoir was saturated, i.e. at its bubble-point. At some later stage, after 25
MM STB oil has cumulatively been produced and the average reservoir pressure has fallen to 1,900 psia, calculate
STOIIP (STB) given following data:

β𝑜𝑖 𝑎𝑡 2800 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 1.338 𝑏𝑏𝑙/𝑆𝑡𝑏

β𝑔𝑖 𝑎𝑡 2800 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 0.00101 𝑏𝑏𝑙/𝑆𝑐𝑓
𝑅𝑠𝑜𝑖 𝑎𝑡 2800 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 570 𝑆𝑐𝑓/𝑆𝑡𝑏
𝑅𝑠𝑜 𝑎𝑡 1900 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 280 𝑆𝑐𝑓/𝑆𝑡𝑏
𝑅𝑃 𝑎𝑡 1900 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 850 𝑆𝑐𝑓/𝑆𝑡𝑏
β𝑜 𝑎𝑡 1900 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 1.2305 𝑏𝑏𝑙/𝑆𝑡𝑏
β𝑔 𝑎𝑡 1900 𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑎 0.00151 𝑏𝑏𝑙/𝑆𝑐𝑓

Assuming that this calculated value of N as correct, what is the recovery factor so far for this gascap drive reservoir
between 2800 psia and 1900 psia?

Solution:
Step 1. The following is the particular MBE for Saturated Oil Reservoir ( neglecting the water & rock compressibility
and no Water influx):

β𝑜 − β𝑜𝑖 + 𝑅𝑠𝑜𝑖 − 𝑅𝑠𝑜 β𝑔 β𝑔

𝑁𝑃 β𝑜 + 𝑅𝑃 − 𝑅𝑠𝑜 β𝑔 = Nβ𝑜𝑖 +𝑚 −1
β𝑜𝑖 β𝑔𝑖
Step 2. Calculating the STOIIP using the following equation:
𝑁𝑃 β𝑜 + 𝑅𝑃 − 𝑅𝑠𝑜 β𝑔
𝑁=
β𝑔
β𝑜 − β𝑜𝑖 + 𝑅𝑠𝑜𝑖 − 𝑅𝑠𝑜 β𝑔 + 𝑚β𝑜𝑖 −1
β𝑔𝑖
𝑁= 112.95 𝑀𝑀𝑆𝑡𝑏

Step 3. Calculating the recovery factor:

𝑁𝑃
𝑅𝐹 =
𝑁

𝑅𝐹 = 22.13 %
