Lily Parr
Footballing Legend Gets Gallery
Lily Parr, the top footballer, will be honoured
with her own gallery in the National Football
Museum, in Manchester.
Lily Parr was one of the first paid female
footballers. She played between 1919
and 1951.
In her footballing career, she scored a
massive 986 goals. That’s more than Ronaldo
or Messi!
She was the superstar of her time. She
played in the first women’s matches against
other countries. Her team, Dick, Kerr Ladies,
played for England and beat France 4-0!
Women’s football was once more popular
than men’s. In 1920, 53,000 people went
to see her team play. This changed in 1921
when the FA banned women from playing on
their pitches. This ban lasted until 1971!
A statue of Lily Parr was revealed in the
National Football Museum in Manchester
a year ago. Now, there will be a gallery
opening celebrating her life.
