FLUID MECHANICS AND PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY
(Effective from the admitted batch 2015–16 onwards)
Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions: Each module carries 12 marks.
Answer all modules choosing one question from each module
All parts of the module must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MODULE-I
1. a) What are Compressible and Incompressible fluids 6
b) Derive the barometric equation that can be used to estimate
pressure of a static fluid at any altitude 6
OR
2. Write short notes on:
a) Laminar and turbulent flow 4
b) Viscosity and momentum flux 4
c) Time dependent flow of fluids 4
MODULE-II
3. A pump draws a solution of specific gravity 1.84 from a storage tank
through a 75 mm pipe. The efficiency of the pump is 60 percent. The
velocity in the suction line is 0.914 m/s. The pump discharges through
a 50 mm pipe to an overhead tank. The end of the discharge pipe is
15.2 m above the level of the solution in the feed tank. Friction losses
in the entire piping system are 29.9 J/kg. What pressure must the
pump develop? What is the power delivered to the fluid by the pump? 12
OR
4. a) Obtain the expression for shear stress distribution in a cylindrical
tube 6
b) Derive an expression for loss of head due to sudden enlargement
for fluid flowing in a pipe 6
MODULE-III
5. Derive Ergun equation for the pressure drop in a packed bed and
mention the limitations of the equation 12
OR
6. A pipe of diameter 7.5 cm is carrying water at 200C. In this pipe a
venturi meter is fitted which has a throat diameter of 2.0 cm. If the
differential mercury manometer shows a reading of 50.0 cm, what is
the flow rate of water in the pipe? Venturi coefficient may be taken as
0.98 and the density of mercury as 13600 kg/m3 12
MODULE-IV
7. a) What are the advantages of size reduction and what is an ideal
crusher? 5
b) Give a detailed account of the three laws of crushing. State their
limitations 7
OR
8. Explain briefly the operation of a ball mill. What do you understand
by critical speed in a ball mill and derive the expression for it 12
MODULE-V
9. Classify the various screening equipments and explain Gyrating
screens with neat sketch 12
OR
10. a) Capacity and effectiveness of screen are two opposing factors.
Discuss 6
b) Write short notes on gyratory and vibratory screens 6
