FLUID MECHANICS AND PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY
(Effective from the admitted batch 2015–16 onwards)
Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks.
Answer all units choosing one question from each unit.
All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MODULE-I
1. a) Get an expression for pressure drop in U-tube manometer 6
b) A simple U-tube manometer is installed across an orifice meter.
The manometer is filled with mercury (specific gravity 13.6),
and liquid above the mercury is carbon tetrachloride (specific
gravity 1.6). The manometer reads 200 mm. What is the pressure
difference over the manometer in Newton’s per square meter 6
OR
2. a) Explain the terms shear stress and shear rate by considering the
steady state one dimensional flow of an incompressible fluid
along a solid plane 6
b) Explain the rheological behavior of fluids with a neat diagram 6
MODULE-II
3. Derive Bernoulli’s equation with a neat diagram by considering
kinetic energy correction factor, friction and pump work and explain
the various terms in the equation 12
OR
4. Derive Hagen-Poiseuille equation for laminar flow of incompressible
Newtonian fluids in a circular pipe 12
MODULE-III
5. A bed of 0.005 cm dia particles is fluidized by air. The density and
Viscosity of air is 0.0015 gm/cc and 0.018 cP respectively. The flow
is laminar and hence Cd = 24/Rep. Density of the solids is 1000 kg/m3.
Calculate the terminal velocity of particles, given Rep is Reynolds
number based on particle diameter at terminal velocity 12
OR
6. Explain the principle and working of centrifugal pump. Discuss about
the characteristics curves in detail 12
MODULE-IV
7. a) Write short notes on laws of crushing 6
b) Define Average Size of Particles. What are different ways of
finding Average size of mixed particles? Explain briefly 6
OR
8. a) Explain hammer mill with neat sketch 8
b) What is the power required to crush 100 ton/hr of limestone if
80% of the feed passes a 2 inch screen and 80% of the product
passes a 1/8 inch screen? The work index for lime stone is 12.74 4
MODULE-V
9. State ad explain screen effectiveness and derive the governing equation
for effectiveness of a screen 12
OR
10. Classify the various screening equipments and explain Gyrating
screens with neat sketch 12
