ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express our special thanks to my teacher Mr Chan Jun Jie who gave me this golden
opportunity to do this wonderful Problem Based Learning (PBL) on the topic Traditional Methods of
Treatment for Health Issues Related to The Nervous System. I may not complete this project successfully
without his help. I am very thankful. Secondly, I would also like to thank my parents who supported me.
This gave me a lot of motivation to finish this project.
INTRODUCTION
The nervous system is made up of a network of nerve cells or neurons. This system comprises two main
subsystems: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system
includes the brain and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system consists of 12 pairs of cranial
nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. Nerve impulses are sent to the brain and back by the cranial nerves.
Spinal nerves send impulses from and to the spine.
Problems in the nervous system may occur slowly and cause gradual loss of general function. Or
they may occur suddenly and cause life-threatening problems. Symptoms may be mild or severe. Some
serious conditions, diseases, and injuries that may cause nervous system problems include: blood supply
problems, injuries (trauma, especially to the head and spinal cord), mental health problems (anxiety,
depression or psychosis), exposure to toxins, nutritional deficiencies, infections, and other conditions that
occur at birth.
Methods of treating theses problems vary from medicines to rehabilitation after brain injury or
stroke. There are also traditional methods of treatment for health issues related to the nervous system. The
aim of today’s project is to conduct a research study on the use of traditional methods in the treatment of
health issues related to the nervous system.

METHODOLOGY

Figure 1
1. Information about the nervous system was obtained through the textbook as shown in figure 1.
2. Find reliable sources on the internet and study about the symptoms and problems of health issues
related to the nervous system as shown in figure 2.
3. Search for medical magazines and record traditional methods used in treatment of health issues
related to the nervous system as shown in figure 3.
4. Compile all information into a list.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
3 traditional methods for treating health issues related to the nervous system have been chosen: cupping,
acupuncture, and moxibustion.
Cupping is a type of traditional Chinese massage. It is done by placing multiple spherical glass or
plastic cups on the body. Practitioners of cupping warm up the cups by lighting a cotton ball or other
flammable substances and then placing them inside the cup to remove all of the oxygen. The flammable
substance is then removed and the cup is placed against the skin. The air in the cup cools and a low
pressure area is created. This allows the cup to stick to the skin. This procedure is said to suck out all the
toxins that are trapped inside the body and improve blood circulation. Cupping can help to treat pinched
nerve symptoms such as numbness, tingling or weakness as long as the pinching of the nerve is caused by
tight muscles and not pathological.
Acupuncture is the practise of inserting thin and long needles into the skin at different points of
your body. In traditional Chinese medicine, there are as many as 2,000 acupuncture points on the human
body that are connected by 12 main meridians. These meridians conduct energy, or “Qi,” between the
surface of the body and its internal organs. Acupuncture points are seen as places where nerves, muscles,
and connective tissue can be stimulated. The stimulation increases blood flow, while at the same time
triggering the activity of the body’s natural painkillers. Acupuncture is said to relieve pain in multiple
body parts ranging from neurological pain to back pain. Acupuncture is also said to provide relief to
patients suffering from hot flashes, anxiety, depression, insomnia, shingles, constipation and the flu.
Moxibustion is a form of therapy that entails the burning of mugwort leaves to facilitate healing.
Mugwort leaves are small and spongy herbs that are believed to enhance healing properties of the body.
Practitioners generally hold a burning moxa (mugwort leaves) stick close to, but not touching, the surface
of the skin. In this method, the moxa material is compressed into a stick or pole, looking not unlike an
oversized cigar that can be lit and allowed to smolder, producing a unique form of very penetrating heat.
The smoldering moxa stick is held over specific areas, often, though not always, corresponding to certain
acupuncture points. The glowing end of the moxa stick is held about an inch or two above the surface of
the skin until the area reddens and becomes suffused with warmth. The purpose of moxibustion is to
warm and invigorate the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi, strengthen the kidney Yang, expel wind and
disperse cold, and dissolve stagnation. It can also help with chronic inflammation, hypersensitivity, and
thermal hyperalgesia.
CONCLUSION
This study focused on traditional methods that can be used to treat health issues related to the nervous
system. It can be concluded that the methods chosen are effective against different types of health issues
related to the nervous system. Cupping is an effective treatment for numbness, tingling and weakness if
the cause of the symptoms are the pinching of nerves. Acupuncture can provide relieve with most pains
and help with hot flashes, anxiety, depression, insomnia, shingles, constipation and the flu. Moxibustion
is used to treat chronic inflammation, hypersensitivity, and thermal hyperalgesia.
