An apartment building contains 12 units consisting of one- and two-bedroom apartments that

rent for $360 and $450 per month, respectively. When all units are rented, the total monthly
rental is $4,950. What is the number of two-bedroom apartments?

First of all, we can say that:

x= the number of one-bedroom apartments
y= the number of two-bedroom apartments
We have a total number of 12 apartments, which means that x+y=12
We also know that one-bedroom apartments are rented for $360 and two-bedroom apartments
are rented for $450 per month, the total monthly rental being $4.950. All this can be
mathematically written as:

{360 x +x +450y=12
y =4950

360 x + 450 y =4950

 {
x=12− y

 We replace in the first equation the “x”, taking into consideration the second

equation: {360(12−x=12−
y )+450 y=4950
y

 {360 x 12−360 y +450 y =4950

x=12− y

 {4320−360x =12−
y+ 450 y=4950
y

 {4320+90 y =4950
x=12− y

 {90 y=4950−4320
x=12− y

 {90x=12−
y=630
y
 { y=630 /90
x =12− y

y=7
 {x=12−7 =>
x=5, y=7

In conclusion, there are 5 one-bedroom apartments and 7 two-bedroom apartments.

We can also verify the results:
5 x 360 + 7 x 450 =4950?
1800 + 3150 = 4950?
4950=4950, it means the problem is correctly solved.
