INTRODUCTION
• Humayun’s tomb of Mughal emperor
Humayun in delhi india built by akbar.
• Designed by miraK Mirza ghiyas a
percian architect.
• The tomb stands on a 120- square-metre
platform and reaches a height of 47
metres.
• Built of rubble mussonry.
• The structure is the earliest example of
the use of red sandstone and white
marble in such great quantities.
PLAN
• The central octagonal chamber of the
cenopath of Humayun which is
encompassed by octagonal chembers
at the diagonals.
• It also has arched lobbies on the sides
and their openings are closed with
perforted screens.
• Central octagonal hall ha eight alcoves
one on either side divided into a
double- storeyed elevation.
• Above them is the stalactite which
takes the double – dome.
• Three emphatic arches dominate on
each side of which the central one is
the highest.

• Line: The use of horizontal and vertical lines in the elevation.

Texture: The combination of rough


texture of the sandstone and soft texture
of the white marble.
Principles OF Design
• Pattern: Geometrical patterns at the interior of central
dome. The various jaali patterns bcoz of which the
interiors are well lit.They act as lattice screens from
which the sunshite enters the interiors.

• Contrast: Humayun’s tomb was built from red


sandstone and marble and thus exudes a stark
contrast against the blue sky.
History of Humayun/s tomb
• It was built near Yamuna by emperor
Humayun’s firs wife begum bega aka haji
Begum to immortize the memory of her
husband .
• Though the emperor died in 156, it wasn’t
until 1565 that the construction for the
monument beagan.
• After seven years of construction the tomb
and the surrounding Charbagh garden
were completed in 1572.
• The monument also played a major role in
the modern history in india.
Humayun’s tomb along with purana qila served as refugee camps for those
migrating to Pakistan. For almost five years the camps were held at this site,
causing much damage to the main structure and the gardens
Later, when the monument come under the control of the archaeological survey
of india,it was once again restored to its original glory.

several important
renovation
projects were
accomplished in
this complex.
Major restoration
of the
monument and
surrounding
gardens were • Thanks to the efforts of aga khan trust for culture the
organized from archaeological survey of india and the national culture fund a
1999 to 2003. project with total cost $650,000.
Architecture
It was designed by Mirak mirza ghiyaz, a parsian architect whom the begum herself
chose. It is a vivid example of the Mughal style of architecture with elements of
Indian and persian styles incorporated into it.
The huge tomb with a height of 14 feet and widhth of 299 feet is mainly built in
redd sandstone while white marble has been used for the double layered dome.
Designed as a dynastic mausoleum the structure has 124 small vauled chambers
within its walls.
Charbagh the persian style garden surrounded the tomb structure has a
quadrilateral layout .
It features several paved walkways water channels a bath chamber and a pavilion .
The walled tomb complex has two entrance gateways one on the south and the
other on the west.

More than 100 graves belonging to various members of the royal family is
