What Is a Population
➢ A population is a group of
one species living in the
same environment.

4
Factors Affecting Population
Growth

There are many factors affecting population

growth but the 4 main factors are:
➢ Birth Rate
➢ Death Rate
➢ Immigration
➢ Emigration

5
Birth and Death Rate
➢ The size of a population
depends on the rate at which
the organisms are dying and
reproducing. A growing
population has a higher birth
rate than death rate.

6
Birth and Death Rate
➢ The competition for food and
space; effects of disease, pests,
invasive species, natural
disasters have a negative impact
on the population because it
hinders the birth rate and
possibly increases the death rate
leading to negative growth.
7
Immigration

What is immigration?
Immigration is to enter and
settle in a foreign country
leaving a past home.

8
Emigration

What is emigration?
Emigration is the act of
leaving one's country to
settle permanently in
another

9
How does immigration
and emigration affect
the population?
It can be both positive and negative
for the country receiving the
immigrants will be more innovative
but for the immigrants native home
they will start experiencing brain
drain and that will affect the
livelihood of the people.

Biotic & Abiotic Factors
affecting the population

11
Competition for food
and space
All organisms need a place to live,
food and water so naturally there is
competition to get the best habitat.

12
Effects of Disease

With an increasing population there

is a rapid spread of communicable
diseases. Disease agents cause a
major decrease in the population. An
example of this is the bubonic plague.

13
Pests

Pests can affect the crop growth, and

the livestock. They can also spread
disease agents (viruses, bacteria,
fungi, protozoa, and worms).

14
Invasive Species

Invasive species are species that aren’t

native to the environment a population
inhabits that alter the environment
negatively. These invasive species have the
same needs as the other species making
the competition for the resources harder.
invasive species can cause extinction in
some plant and animal species.
15
Natural Disasters

Natural Disasters destroy the

environment and can also lead to an
outbreak of diseases.
