Objective of
Presentation
o Describe the impact of human activities
on our natural resources, both positive
and negative.

Objective

• Humans have converted forest to agricultural and urban
uses, exploited species, fragmented wildlands, changed
the demographic structure of forests, altered habitat,
Impact on Forests and degraded the environment with atmospheric and soil
pollutants.
Positive and Negative • Despite the many ways in which we as humans have
destroyed the forest and its biosystem there are a few
ways in which we have positively impacted forest life.

Positive Impacts
Planting Programs • Reducing Demand

These programs aim to:

• Undo and rectify the effects of
deforestation
• Absorb pollution and dust from
the air
• Rebuild natural habitats and
ecosystems,
• Mitigate global warming Reducing Demand
• Nonprofit groups like Rainforest
Relief are attempting to reduce
the demand for rainforest
logging by persuading
consumers to stay away from
buying tropical hardwoods,
which come from the rainforests

Deforestation

Deforestation
Negative Impact

Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees to

make room for something besides forest. This can
include clearing the land for agriculture or grazing, or
using the timber for fuel, construction or
manufacturing.

marine food web and may lead to largely unknown
Life consequences for the biodiversity and survival of
marine life forms.
Positive and Negative • Although there are many negative impacts on marine
life there are a few positive ways in which we as
humans influence marine life forms.

Positive Impacts
Marine Protected Areas
• Increasing the protection of the Ocean via the designation of specially protected areas has had
positive impacts on habitats and fish stocks in many locations.

Beach Clean Up
• Cleaning the beach also improves the coastal and ocean ecosystem by making sure that none
of the trash in the sea kills marine life or is toxic enough to disrupt the marine life cycle.

Ocean Habitat Restoration

• Because of greater awareness that coastal habitats generate the fish that supports fisheries,
protect us from damaging storms and contribute to climate regulation. The ‘Mapping Ocean
Wealth’ program has focused on documenting the extent of loss of these habitats and the
value of the services that have been lost. The high value of these lost services now place
coastal/marine habitat restoration, and conservation of the remaining habitat, as a top priority
for coastal communities and businesses.

Negative Impacts
Destructive Fishing Techniques
• Destructive fishing techniques devastate the marine environment and include bottom
trawling, bycatch, the use of poison and explosives and ghost fishing.

Oil Spills
• Sadly, oil spills still occur, coating beaches, sinking to smother Ocean plant life and killing a
wide variety of birds, fish and sea mammals.

Habitat Destruction
• Virtually all Ocean habitats have been affected in some way via drilling or mining, dredging for
aggregates for concrete and other building materials, destructive anchoring, removal of corals
and land “reclamation”.

Invasive Species
• Invasive species can lead to the extinction of native plants and animals, destroy biodiversity,
and permanently alter habitats through both direct and indirect effects. This can result in
fundamental disruptions of aquatic ecosystems.

Plastic Pollution
• Disturbing impacts of marine plastics are the ingestion, suffocation and entanglement of
hundreds of marine species. Marine wildlife such as seabirds, whales, fishes and turtles, mistake

debris. 11
Overfishing
Negative Impact

Overfishing is the removal of a species of fish from a

body of water at a rate that the species cannot
replenish, resulting in those species becoming
underpopulated in that area.

Overfishing

Overfishing
How does Overfishing Impact the Environment!?

When too many fish are taken out of the ocean it creates an imbalance that can erode the
DISRUPT food web and lead to a loss of other marine life. For example, herring is a vital prey species
for the cod. Therefore, when herring are overfished the cod population suffers as well. And
FOOD CHAIN
this has a chain reaction on other species too.

Decades of overfishing has resulted in the decline of key fish stocks as well as collateral
DECLINING impacts to other marine life. Hundreds of thousands of fishery are captured each year.
WILDLIFE Many of these species are endangered and protected, while some such as the vaquita, are
on the brink of extinction.

Overfishing can impact entire ecosystems. It can change the size of fish remaining, as well
CAUSES A DENT as how they reproduce and the speed at which they mature. This is especially true for
IN MARINE species that are constantly in-demand. Although there are replenishment efforts in place,
LIFE this cannot provide an immediate solution since it takes time for fish and other marine
POPULATION creatures to grow and reproduce. Your Logo or Name Here 13

Overpopulation
Negative Impact
Overpopulation refers to a population which exceeds its
sustainable size within a particular environment or habitat.
Overpopulation results from an increased birth rate,
decreased death rate or the immigration to a new ecological
niche with a sudden decline in available resources. Therefore,
overpopulation describes a situation in which a population in
an ecosystem have limited the resources available to sustain
all organisms.

Overpopulation
How does Overpopulation Impact our Natural Resources!?

Impacts Forestry Deforestation

• Trees are cut down, deforestation, to create space to build houses for the growing population. This also affects the air as the
deforestation causes more carbon dioxide to be released into the air which is harmful to humans and animals.

Impacts Energy Resources Burning of Fossil Fuels

• Overpopulation causes an increase in the amount of electricity used, the modes of transport used and the number of factories.
Fossil fuels are extracted and used to fuel factories and machines. These resources are nonrenewable and take billions of years
to form in the earth. As the population grows, these fossil fuels are used in excess causing a strain on the environment. In
addition to the loss of fossil fuel. The burning of these fossil fuels add gases to the air that cause Global Warming levels to rise.

Impacts Marine Life Water Pollution

• The increase in population also causes a decrease in water supply. The amount of available water for use is not enough to supply
the growing population. Poor waste management causes some of the available water in seas, lakes, rivers and oceans to become
polluted. This makes the water unsuitable for use. Overpopulation

Impact on Energy
Resources
There are two types of energy sources that we
use for energy. They are renewable (alternate)
and non-renewable energy(fossil fuels).

Energy
Your LogoResources
or Name Here 21
Energy Resources
• The use of non-renewable energy also know as fossil fuels has several negative impacts on the environment.
• Negative Effects on the Environment include:
Air and water pollution
Damage to public health
Wildlife and habitat loss
Global warming emissions.

• The use of non-renewable energy has no positives affects on the environment.

Energy
Your LogoResources

Alternate Energy
Sources
• In contrast, most renewable energy sources
produce little to no global warming
emissions. Even when including “life cycle”
emissions of clean energy (i.e., the
emissions from each stage—manufacturing,
installation, operation, decommissioning),
the global warming emissions associated
with renewable energy are minimal.
• Other Benefits for the Environment include:
Reduces some types of air pollution.
Reducing dependence on imported fuels
Improved Public Health
