Summary of the Presentation

The chemicals and materials which are highly toxic in nature thus can affect the health and
welfare of people. The radioactive substances destroy marine life and forest; leaving the
land barren. The hazardous wastes must be managed with reasonable care. It may include
radioactive substances, metals which are highly toxic, synthetic carbon-based substances
and petroleum ingredients. Different types of dangerous chemicals are usually found in the
workplaces such as oil and gas industries and other workplaces similar to these industries. It
is important to be aware of the lethal gases and chemicals which are released in the air
causing massive damage to the environment and causing negative impact on human health
and atmosphere. The waste produced due to drilling, extracting and refining, including the
emissions of petroleum and oil, is vitally destroying the environment. The chemicals used
during the process of refining are hazardous. This presentation includes different questions
related to workplace hazards which can be harmful to the health of nearby people and how
to overcome these risks.

1. Task 4. Project

Assignment Activity 1
Look at the Code of Practice for “Hazardous Manual Tasks” and answer the following
questions (you will need to source this document yourself)

· What range of workplace activities do Manual Tasks cover?

There is a wide range of the workplace on manual tasks that might cause hazards to the
workers. Some of the manual tasks include working on a conveyor line, stacking shelves, or
computer work that causes a disorder of musculoskeletal. The manual task includes
pushing, pulling, lifting up or lowering some tasks. These tasks require much energy and
sometimes can lead to manual hazards at workplaces.

What does MSD stand for?

Musculoskeletal disorders or Work-related musculoskeletal disorders

· What are the four steps to identify hazardous manual task?

Hazard identification

The basic and the first step in managing the risk of manual task hazards include identifying
the hazard that can cause musculoskeletal disorders. The environment factors also play a
part in causing workplace hazards such as heavy machineries or equipment's along with the
higher risk of falling of these objects.

Risk assessment

The second step includes risk assessment. This process is done to examine the source of the
hazards in order to prevent the hazards. The main benefits of risk assessment are to
determine the chemical hazards at the workplace and why these risks are taking place as
well as implementing the ways to overcome the dangers.

Risk control

The third step includes the control of risk at workplace hazard. This includes the control with
the highest and improved level of protection from the risks, which includes replacement of
heavy machinery with light ones as well as height adjustable work places.

Review of control measures

The last step includes the review of controls measure. This step allows for the identification
and evaluation of any control means, along with the chance to change the actions which
need to be changed.

· Describe 5 characteristics of Hazardous manual tasks?

Rapid or sudden force

Consistent movement

Repetitive force

Sustained force

Abnormal or awkward posture

· What are the five questions in assessing risk factors?

What are the types of problems that you are assessing?

What are the criteria of your level of severity?

What are the criteria of your level of likelihood?

What are the damages of negative consequences?

What are your expectations related to the negative consequences if happened again?

· What are two types of vibration?

 Whole body vibration

 Hand arm vibration
(Both of these vibration causes physical or health illness)

· What are the weight limits for females in the code?

The weight limits depend on the women's waist and height. This is prescribed with most
extreme weight is decreased to 5kg for loads being held by the length of arms od the height of
shoulder. The lower weights women are suitable in the code.

· Describe 2 mechanical aids that can be used for lifting that are described in the code of
practice.

Moving Heavy Loads

While moving weighty loads around, there are some of the basic things that ought to be
done to prevent or control mishaps. First of all, it is better to remove the heavy loads when
workers are not around to prevent accidents. if by chance the barriers have to be moved
than there should be barriers at that place.

Lift Plans

The lift plans are for tasks that utilization cranes, a conventional lift plan should be ready.
Lift plans are one of the careful considered, there are risk of lift plans as they can cause
many hazards at workplaces and appropriate control measures are recognized and set up.
Assignment Activity 2

Assignment Activity 2
For the following case study please explain.

1. The employer’s responsibilities under the Model Act.

2. The employee’s responsibilities under the Model Act.

Case Study:

Michael works as a marketing assistant at a major five-star hotel; his office is located on
the third floor of the hotel and is quite a comfortable area, even if it is a bit cramped.
Michael’s job is to liaise with the kitchens with regard to the menus and specific
arrangements for functions and VIP guests. He regularly needs to speak to the chef in
person, and spend much of the day visiting them in the kitchens. The kitchens are often
busy, and floors can sometimes become wet and slippery if certain types of shoes are
worn. Michael’s uniform is usually a suit, tie and standard black shoes. On this particular
day, he was discussing some VIP arrangements with the chef in the seafood restaurant
and, upon leaving the kitchen, he slipped on a damp floor and suffered a broken arm. He
was in such pain and an ambulance needed to be called. While waiting for the
ambulance, the executive chef attended and remarked that Michael was stupid and it
was his own fault, as the shoes he was wearing were not suitable to be worn in a
kitchen.

1. The employer’s responsibilities under the Model Act.

The employer’s responsibility was to make sure that the workplace is safe and prevent from
any health risk in that place, and if by chance any accidents happen, he needs to provide
medical aid. The chef’s responsibility was to aware Michael that this area was slippery, and

he should walk carefully, and the chef needed to accept that somehow this accident was
also his fault too.

2. The employee’s responsibilities under the Model Act.

The employee’s responsibility was to wear suitable shoes before entering the kitchen in
order to prevent these kinds of accidents. The biggest mistake Michael made was that
before entering the kitchen, he wore a simple suit with tie as well as simple black shoes. He
should be aware that specific shoes need to be wear in such areas. As an employee, it is his
responsibility to take care of his health and people besides him.

Assignment Activity 3
Work groups and health and safety committees

Look at your workplace to answer the following questions. If you are not currently
working, you may base on your assignment on the company Virgin Australia.

Part 1 Explain what workgroups are in place or what work groups you would
recommend putting in place. State the reasons for these work groups.

The workgroup I wanted to implement in the health work group. The health in virgin
Australia can include a paramedical staff in order to prevent any health issue on the airline.
First, if someone has a cardiac arrest while on the airline, there must be a medical staff with
a first aid kit on hand to prevent such mishaps. Secondly, I would like to focus on the kitchen
staff or workgroup because a healthy meal can prevent workplace hazards.

Part 2 Who is on the health and safety committee or, who would you recommend
sitting on that committee?

The head person of the health and safety committee is the one who holds the official post
and a chief inspector. I would like to recommend senior employees' representative as the
chairperson of the committee, he must be aware of every single detail about health and
safety. So that he can work better at the workplace.

Part 3 Explain your reasons for the makeup of the committee.

The reason behind making this committee is in order to protect the worker and maintain
safety and health at the workplace. Making suggestions about close personal protection.

Assignment Activity 4
Identify workplace hazards in following areas:

1. Evacuation of staff and customers

Evacuation of the staff and customers happens where there are harmful gases, fire, toxic
gas emission or earthquake happening inside the working environment region. Due to
such incidents, such as natural disasters or others like fire or toxic gases, can highly
affect the workers inside the workplace as well as the customers.

2. Security management of cash, documents etc.

Unauthorised use of arms or weapons, unethical hacking and fighting will eventually lead to
workplace hazards. The illegal use of a weapon not only affects the worker's life but also the
customers at the workplace. The invasion of security or documents pirating can harm the
privacy. Some of the following that increased up the robbery and security invasion include

 A safe which is visible in front of the people

 Large amount of money stored in the workplace
 The location of business or workplace where crime rate is high.

3. Chemical hazards

Different types of dangerous chemicals are usually found in the workplaces such as oil
and gas industries and other workplaces similar to these industries. Some of the major
chemical hazards include glues, acids, bleaching, pesticides, sanitizer, harmful gas
emission, paint and petroleum products can be harmful to the workers

4. Slips trips and falls.

Slips, trips and falls are one of the common hazards in workplaces where the majority of the
workers are injured. The slips, trips and fall workplace hazards involve slippery or wet floor,
greasy, oily floors, floor covered with powders and uneven surfaces. It can lead to many
severe injuries at the workplaces such as fracture of bones and internal injury.

5. Burns

The common workplace burns hazards include chemical, electrical and thermal burn to the
worker at the workplace. The chemical burn includes contact with lethal acids which eat the
skin away and cause a major burning sensation. The electrical burn can include any contact

with the electricity or an open wire. The current passes within the body and causes burn.
The last burn is thermal, which can happen when steams, hot liquids, or flames contact the
workers and cause severe burn and heat.

6. Ergonomic

Ergonomic hazards at the workplace are dangerous factors that cause musculoskeletal
disorder, wear and tear injuries. These hazards include abnormal and awkward postures,
fixed positions, direct pressure, vibration, high level temperature, noises or clamours
and work pressure

Assignment Activity 5
Using five of the hazards that you previously identified in your workplace, grade the risk
for each hazard using the Risk Table below:

Highly
Risk Assessment Very likely Likely Unlikely
Unlikely
Fatality High High High Medium
Major Injury High High Medium Medium
Minor Injury High Medium Medium Low
Negligible Injury Medium Medium Low Low

Note: You may require creating five tables for the five hazards you have identified
previously.

Hazard 1: __Burning Hazard___________

Risk assessment: High

High ☐ Medium ☐ Low ☐

Explain your reasons for that grade:

If a person has a contact with fire or any chemical, thermal and electrical burn, it will
eventually lead to higher risk as the burn eats away the skin. There are permanent marks on
the affected area with severe damage of tissues. So that is why there are more chances of
health hazard from burning.

Hazard 2: _Slips, trips and falls.______________

Risk assessment: Low

High ☐ Medium ☐ Low ☐

Explain your reason for that grade:

There is less risk of falling or tripping on the work places, so hazards of slipping and falling
may be less in the workplaces. If by chance falling happens, the injury may not be very
serious. There are fewer chances of slipping as the employees look afters the health and
safety at the workplace.

Hazard 3: ____Ergonomics___________
Risk assessment: Medium

High ☐ Medium ☐ Low ☐

Explain your reasons for that grade:

The reason behind this grade is that ergonomics is more likely to cause musculoskeletal
disorder by abnormal and awkward posture during work or at workplaces. The fixed body
positions lead to backaches and other health issues.

Hazard 4: ___Security management of cash and document____________

Risk assessment: High

High ☐ Medium ☐ Low ☐

Explain your reasons for that grade:

Hazards of security management are considered as high as it involves hacking, unauthorised

weapons at the workplace which can harm any worker or customer privacy as well as their
lives.

Hazard 5: ___Evacuation of staff and customers____________

Risk assessment: low

High ☐ Medium ☐ Low ☐

Explain your reasons for that grade:
