Cloze Activity #1 (Chapters 1-2)
The story begins when Opal goes to a Winn-Dixie grocery store to
buy macaroni-and-cheese, white rice, and tomatoes. While Opal
is , a dog starts running around the store. It knocks
over displays of food. While Opal laughs, the store manager and
work feverishly to catch the dog and get it out of the
store. After the dog knocks over the manager, he says that someone
should call the . Opal does not want the dog taken
away, so she lies and says the dog belongs to her. When she asks the
dog to come to her, she calls him Winn-Dixie. The dog then runs to
her like he’s been doing so all his life. As Opal walks home with her
new dog, she falls in love with him, even though he and
is not healthy. But the dog seems to when Opal talks to him.
At home, Opal Winn-Dixie to her father. She
calls him “the ” instead of “dad” because he is always so
busy planning sermons for church. At first, he says they can’t keep
Winn-Dixie. They live in a park and it’s against the rules
for people there to have a pet. But when the dog comes in, he cutely
snuggles his head into the preacher’s lap. The preacher can tell that
Winn-Dixie needs a home and decides to allow him to stay.

Cloze Activity #2 (Chapters 3-4)
Opal gives Winn-Dixie a in chapter three. But more
importantly, she talks to Winn-Dixie about some things that are
her. She tells Winn-Dixie that she is sad that they
moved to Naomi because she does not have any here.
Opal has also been thinking about her , who left when
Opal was three years old. Opal also says that she wants to ask the
preacher to tell her things about her mother, but she is afraid he will
get mad. The whole time she talks to Winn-Dixie, Opal feels like he
is to her. After finishing the bath, Opal works up the
courage to ask the preacher to tell her ten things about her mother.
While the preacher is thinking about this, Winn-Dixie gives him a
nudge with his nose. Then the preacher agrees.
He tells Opal several good things about her mother. She was a
fast , knew all the constellations, and she could make
anyone . But she hated being a preacher’s wife
because it felt like people were always judging her. She also had a
problem. But her father ended by telling Opal that
her mother loved her very much.
