• Beauty pageant is a competition
that has traditionally focused on judging
and ranking the physical attributes of
the contestants. Inner beauty is now a part
of pageants, with personality,
intelligence, character, and humanitarian
participation all being judged through
private interviews and replies to public on-
stage questions.
THE BIG • There are four major international beauty pageants for
adult women, known as The Big Four : Miss World , Miss
Universe , Miss International and Miss Earth.
FOUR
• MISS UNIVERSE is an annual
international beauty pageant
that is run by the
American based Miss
Universe Organization. It airs
in more than 190
countries worldwide and
seen by more than half a
billion people annually.
• First winner of
Miss Universe - Armi Kuusela
in 1952, Finland.
• MISS WORLD is the oldest
running international
beauty pageant. It was
created in UK by Eric
Morley's in 1951. Since his
death in 2000, Morley's
widow, Julia Morley, has
co-chaired the pageant.
• First winner of Miss World
– Kiki Hakansson in 1951,
Sweden.
• MISS INTERNATIONAL is a
Tokyo based international
beauty pageant organized by
the International Culture
Association. The pageant
was first held in 1960. Miss
International is the fourth
largest pageant in the world
in terms of having crowned
national winners to
participate in the
international contest.
• MISS EARTH is an annual
international
environmental – themed
beauty pageant promoting
environmental awareness.
It is organized by
Philippine – based
Carousel Productions
through the Miss Earth
Foundation and was first
held in 2001.
• First winner of Miss Earth -
Catharina Svensson in
2001, Denmark.

guaranteed to encourage self-confidence. Beauty Promote friendships.
pageants might also help shyness and nervousness
towards others.

While beauty pageants around the world are primarily about

putting idealized versions of femininity on a competitive stage
and awarding a ''Royal" title and crown to the winner, they
are also about using femininity to represent other issues.

women. In certain instances,
these pageants can result
in self-esteem issues,
unnecessary dieting, or even to
the extent of self-harm.

stereotypes impose on the
women body with the rules on
size, height and perfection.

Objectify women by putting a

focus on their
physical appearance and not
who they are as individual.
 CONCLUSION

• Some people are big fans of such pageant whereas some others have
boycotted such shows right from the beginning. These contests are not only
restricted to adults or females but also encouraging small children and men
to come forward and participate. We can’t say whether beauty shows are
good or bad, because not all will agree on what is good and what is bad. As
they are going to stay, it is necessary to reform them in such a way that they
do not create insecurities and low self-esteem in young girls. Then beauty
shows will turn into harmless and entertaining.
