h) Explain the advantage of star delta in terms starting currents.
Project 4
A shipping and forwarding company in Mutare has completed its loading and receiving bay.
Mutare polytechnic has been contracted to construct an overhead crane. The bay is 100 x 10 m
and the gantry is 15 m high. The electrical department has been tasked to come up with electrical
requirements for the project.
a) The crane is supposed to move forward and reverse on the gantry at a top speed of
20m/min. The crane should stop at limit points, which are 5 m from the ends of the
gantry. A 100 Hp 2880-rpm squirrel cage induction motor is required for the longitudinal
horizontal traverse of the crane. 220V, 20KW Magnetic brakes are also coupled to the
main drive shaft to stop the crane. The supply is 415V 50Hz 3 phase.
(i) Using manufacture catalog select the appropriate motor type and frame.
(ii) Give three types of motor enclosures.
(iii) Design and wire a control and power circuit for the above situation.
(iv) Explain circuit operation
(v) Prepare a BOQ for the project.
(vi) Give 5 requirements for motor starters.

b) The crane is going to lift a maximum load of 50 tons. A 150 Hp motor is required for
vertical traverse. When lifting up the motor is supposed to run continuously to a height
suitable enough. When lowering the motor should jog or inch.
(i) Select the appropriate motor for the project.
(ii) Design and wire a starter circuit for the motor.
(iii) Explain circuit operation.
(iv) What are the precautions to be taken in motor starter circuits?
(v) What is the maximum power rating for a star delta starter?
(vi) What other type of starter could be used for this situation?
Project 5
A diamond mining company is installing a diamond processing plant. The separation plant has a
layout plan as shown in the diagram below.

M1

An electric motor drives a vibro-feeder V1, which has two grading screens. The desired grade is
fed to conveyor 1 driven by motor M1, which feeds into another conveyor 2 driven by motor M2.
When the system is started conveyor 2 starts first. Conveyor 1 starts 30seconds after conveyor 2.
Vibro-feeder V1 starts only when conveyor 1 has started for 30 seconds.
When the system is stopped vibro-feeder V1 stops first, after 15 seconds conveyor 1 stops and
after 15 seconds conveyor 2 stops. An overload on one of the motors stops all the motors
immediately and an indicator shows the tripped motor. In case of emergency all the motors
should stop immediately.
The following are the motor specifications.
VI; 30 Hp, 380V 50Hz, 0.85 pf, efficiency 90% at full load, gear coupled
MI and M2; 20 Hp, 380V 50Hz, 0.85 pf, efficiency 93 % at full load.

a) Design and wire the circuit for the plant. Include audible alarm at each stage.
b) Briefly describe circuit operation.
c) What precautions should be taken in environments where there are moving machines that
can be started at any time?
d) State safety clothing that should be considered in dusty and noisy environments.
e) One of the motors fails to start. State 3 possible causes
Project 6
Mutare municipal is constructing an electric carriage on one of its urban city routes, to easy
transport problems. Your institution is tasked to design the electrical circuitry that will control
one of the 200Hp 200V dc motor to be used.

a) State three types of dc motors.

b) Design a control and power circuit for the dc motor.
c) Explain circuit operation.
d) Prepare a materials list for the job.
e) Wire the control and power circuits for the motor
f) What is a dead man switch?
g) Why is it dangerous to connect a series motor on no load?
h) Give two other applications of shunt and series motor.
Project 7
A horticulture industry has three water reservoirs. You have been contracted to install pumps to
supply water to these tanks. The tanks are 500m from the boreholes. The situation is that all the
tanks are required to be filled automatically. One of the tanks has a booster pump that supplies
irrigation water to hydrain points. When there is no water in this tank the borehole motor pumps
water into the tank. A local switch starts the booster pump manually. It can only start when the
tank is full and stops when tank is empty or by means of a stop button. The supply is TNC-S
single phase to the premises.

a) Using manufacture catalogues select the proper type and size of pump motors for the
tanks.
(i) Design starter circuits for tank A and tank C. The booster pump has a totally
enclosed capacitor start capacitor run motor.
(ii) (ii) Explain the circuit operation.
b) Prepare BOQ
c) Wire the circuit
d) Compare single-phase motors and three phase motors.
e) List four types of single-phase motors.
Project 8
Opalcity has decided to upgrade its water treatment plant, by adding two extra treatment tanks.
The existing tank was fed a 3 150 Hp self prime electric water pump 2km away. An additional
