1. What was Dryden's reaction to the mixture of mirth and serious plot in
French plays?
o The mixture of mirth and serious plot which are very notable in
plays that originate from France led to Dryden’s conclusion that
writing a plot of French plays in deemed to be more complex compared
to other plays or at least what he had experience making.
2. What does Dryden say about the speeches in French drama?
o The speeches present in French drama had led the resentment of
Dryden to the influence of France. He also said that the dialogues
are skeptical in a way and is unconvincing.

3. What does Dryden say to the French servile observations of the unities of
time and place?
o The French servile observation of the unities of time and place had
caused Dryden saying that they have brought death of plot, and
narrowness of imagination within themselves. These are all observed
in all of their plays.

4. What does Dryden say about Shakespeare's plays?


o Shakespeare’s plays were condemned by Dryden of the presence of
improbabilities of late romances. He also mentioned Shakespeare’s
lack of decorum due to fact that he had an ignorant age with poor
education as his audience.

5. Explain: "In poets as true genius, is but rare,


True taste is seldom the critic’s share.
Both must alike from heav’n derive their light
These born to judge, as well as those to write."
o The lines state the diversity of styles with diversity in poets.
Nevertheless, they still have a single central goal that is to
inspire others as well as educate their audiences. The lines as
well highlight the ingenuity of a true poet how rare it is to come
across with such talents.

6. What does Pope think of Homer?


o knowing the fact that Pope is a student of Homer as well as the
Pope’s fascination to him since childhood, there is a truth if we
say that he praised Homer for his inventions and the vigor that he
had brought o his audiences for the couple of years of his hey-
days.
7. Explain: "A prudent chief not always must display
His in equal ranks, and fair
But with th' occasion and the place comply
Conceal his force, nay, seem sometimes to fly,
Those off are stratagems which error seem,
Nor is it Homer nods but we see that dream."
o The lines suggest that we must humble ourselves for what we have
achieved for it is totally inappropriate that we boast our ranks or
power that we have acquired.

8. Explain Pope's Statement on literary evaluation which begins With line
243 - 266:

"In wit, as nature, what affects our hearts


Is not th' exactness of peculiar parts;
Tis not a lip, or eye, we beauty call,
But the joint force and full result of all.... "
o Pope’s statement suggests that the things that touch individual
hearts is the summation of all aspects rather than the individual
particulars. It isn’t what we see, or feel, hear, or touch,
individually but rather, it is the combination of all that moves
the heart.

9. What Longinus principle did Johnson follow in the ultimate evaluation of


an artistic work?
o The Longinus principle that Johnson follow in the ultimate evaluate
of an artistic work was the use of conception of beautiful, pathetic
and the sublime.

10. Explain:
In the writings of other poets a character is often an individual; in
those Of Shakespeare a character is a species.
o Shakespeare’s writing which focus on the character as a species,
rather than the individual characteristics. This implies that his
focus is on the society itself.
11. Explain:
In the tragedy form Shakespeare often wrote with great appearance of
toil and study, with little felicity, but in comedy he seems to produce
without labor what no labor can improve.
o The statement tells how Shakespeare focuses on writing his works
with tragic ideas rather than the comedy ones. This is viewed in
his actual works where there are no hints of comedy.
12. Explain the role of imitation in the tragic play
o The imitation in the tragic play is due to the idea that when an
action is serious, complete, and as certain magnitude, the imitate
it.
