Chapter 1
The Problem and It’s Setting

I.Introduction

The term eating habit describes the reason and how people eat, and whom they eat, as
well as the ways they obtain, use, store or discard food. Eating habit is one of the most problem
in society, where there is strong relationship with nutritional status of any person.Erickson
(2006) submits that skipping breakfast drains energy and increases snaking rate while Fitday
(2016) identified various injurious eating habits as food binging which is eating a large amount
of food in one sitting mainly because a meal was skipped and try to compensate for it.Nutritional
status has been defined as an individual’s health condition as it is influenced by the intake and
utilization of nutrients(Todhunter,1970). Additional to this Junk foods has become a prominent
feature of the diet of children worldwide (Bowman et al., 2011). Junk food is widely available
everywhere making it firts choice for not only children but also adults. The fats, sugar, and salts
in junk food draw people like a magnet (Lewis, 2013).
Semirara National High School students are at risk for making poor dietary choices that
can cause significant health problem. Nutritional knowledge becomes more important because
option change and dietary challenges arise. Nutritional has been one of the basic needs of every
individual living on earth. Nutrition is that the process which provides energy to the body to
perform various task in routine life. Poor eating habits include under or over eating, not having
enough of the healthy foods we need each day, or assuming too many types of food and drink,
which are low in fibre or high in fat, salt and sugar.
Therefore, the purpose of the study is to bring awareness to the Semirara National High
School students in the detrimental effects of eating unhealthy foods by having a recommendation
about the correct eating habits and good decision making in eating healthy foods. Also this study
aims to the nutritional facts and effects of bad eating habits to Semirara National High School.

II. Theoretical Framework

PIAGET’S THEORY (2009) can be use as a guide in nutrional education. Infact it helps to
design effective nutritional education appropriate for the developmental stages of childhood.

THEORY OF PLAN BEHAVIOR postulates that the livelihood of an individual enganging in

health behavior( regular exercise) is correlated with the streng of his/her intention to engage in
the behavior.

TEMPORAL SELF REGULATION THEORY was developed by Hall and Fong ( 2007) to
understand healthy and unhealthy eating intentions and behavior. This help to explain
undesirable eating patterns beacause unhealthy eating typically associated with immediate
positive outcomes such as present tastes.

Statement of Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between the eating habits and nutritional status of
students in Semirara National High School.

Significance of the Study

The Semirara National High School belongs to the critical stage in terms of eating
habits and nutritional status. One of our biggest concern is eating habits for students,
that at the study time the brain and energy have to be 100% so they can perform with
all of their ability.

STUDENTS. The study serve the students as their guide or reference in making a good
decision in eating healthy foods rather than junk foods. It will also help the students
to increase their awareness in every food they eat and their eating habits as well.
PARENTS. The result of this study will help you the parents to bring awareness to
their children must eat. Also it will benefit the parents in making the good choices of
what food to eat and to avoid.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS. The study will help the school administrator to increase
awareness and more information about the topic. It will be their means of bringing up
to students on what on healthy life is.
TEACHERS. This study will allow the teachers to add up the information present in
the study to their plan and categories. This will serve as their guide to proper health
education especially to those teachers who are major in health education.

CHAPTER IV. RELATED REVIEW LITERATURE

This chapter presents the gathered researcher from different sources. These studies
will be used as a guide and support to our to our research.

RELATED LITERATURE

Eating a healthy diet helps the brain by providing the vitamins and minerals
needed to function well. Good eating habit not only promotes physical wellbeing but
academic health as well(Naillon, 2007).

Paula (2016) identified the long term effects of bad eating habits as regularly
eating at night, consuming a lot of fast food, skipping breakfast, eating oversized
portions and drinking sugary beverages. All these can contribute to weight gain that
can eventually lead to obesity putting a lot of health risk on a person(Paula, 2016).

There are some factors that affect what people eat which have implications for
students’s nutrition. These factors may be based on cultural, individual, social,
religious, economic, environmental and political influences (Naillon, 2017).
Chinyoka (2014) found that good nutrition can help reduce the destructive
effects of poverty on intellectual development when it is developed early in life.
Water in fact helps the body in so many ways like it boost the brain, it helps
overome fatique, it flushes the kidney leading to less stomach ache also, water
prevents pains in the muscles and joints ( Schwendrel 2014).

Eating a healthy diet can help students feel better, cope with stress, and
perform better in classroom (Centre for Disease Pretvention and Control, 2018).

Flect (2016) argues that children afflicted by sustained poor nutrition are at
greater risk for obesity, mental and emotional health problems, and a failure to thrive
academically linking mental confusion and dullness to poor dieting.
Anurag Srivastava, Syed E Mahmood, […]Bhushan Kumar Archives of Public
Health volume 70, Article number: 8 (2012) One of the greatest problems for India is
undernutrition among children. The country is still struggling with this problem.
Malnutrition, the condition resulting from faulty nutrition, weakens the immune
system and causes significant growth and cognitive delay. Growth assessment is the
measurement that best defines the health and nutritional status of children, while
also providing an indirect measurement of well-being for the entire population.

Pattaneeya Prangthip et al. Int J Adolesc Med Health. 2019.Appropriate growth

of adolescents in these aspects, a correct quantity and quality of nourishment is
required, as a lack of such nourishment among adolescents can lead to various
degrees of malnutrition, which may have implications on their health as well as their
academic achievements. Materials and methods This review examines the research
topics around factors that influence the nutritional status of adolescent students
which can affect their academic performance.
Martin A, et al. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. (2018).The prevalence of
overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence is high. Excessive body fat at a
young age is likely to persist into adulthood and is associated with physical and
psychosocial co-morbidities, as well as lower cognitive, school and later life
achievement. Lifestyle changes, including reduced caloric intake, decreased
sedentary behaviour and increased physical activity, are recommended for prevention
and treatment of child and adolescent obesity.

Nutritional Status and Age at Menarche on Female Students of Junior High
School. Menarche is the first menstrual period as one of the sign of puberty. There are
many factors may affect the age at menarche such as nutritional status, genetic,
environmental conditions, socioeconomic status, and education. The purpose of this
research is to determine the relationship between nutritional status and age of
menarche on female(Juliyatmi, Rihul Husnul; Handayani, Lina – International Journal
of Evaluation and Research in Education, 2015)
Assessment of Nutritional Status of Boys and Girls in Government School
Children in Rompicherla Mandal Andhra Pradesh, India. Nutrition is the intake of food
to meet the body's dietary needs through different sources namely vegetarian and
non-vegetarian foods. Good nutrition and well balanced diet with regular physical
activities is acceptable. Poor nutrition leads to reduction in immunity of an individual,
on the other hand increased levels of nutrition leads.(Sasikala, P. – Journal of
Education and Practice, 2016)

Genetic Influences on Adolescent Eating Habits.Behavioral genetic research
shows that variation in eating habits and food consumption is due to genetic and
environmental factors. The current study extends this line of research by examining
the genetic contribution to adolescent eating habits.(Beaver, Kevin M.; Flores, Tori;

Are Eating Habits Associated with Adequate Sleep among High School Students?
Background: Sleep deprivation adversely impacts cognitive performance. A nutritious
diet is one strategy that can prevent sleep deprivation and its adverse effects.
However, few data exist regarding the influence of diet on sleep duration among
adolescents.(Bhurosy, Trishnee; Thiagarajah, Krisha – Journal of School Health, 2020).

Sustainability and Healthy Habits in School: Eating and Physical Activity.Obesity

in childhood has become a major global public health concern. Its considerable
increase in the last decades took the World Health Organization (WHO) to regard this
fact as one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century.(Ramos, Sara;
Vale, Susana; Pinto, Alexandre; Rodrigues, Pedro; Barbot, António – International
Journal of Curriculum and Instruction, 2020).
According to Alaimo et al. (2001) poor nutrition or manultrition is one of the
major factors associated with a detrimental cognitive development and poor
academic performance.
Thatcher and Lester (1985) also indicate that the majority of studies point
directly to poor diet or nutrition as being the root factor or behavioral problems and
learning disabilities.
Incidence Factors of Manultrition Among Children. It is starting that across the
country, school-age children are consuming inadequate nutritious food, which may be
the cause of many different problems as they reach adulthood (Alaimo, 2005).
Kobayashi and Farahbakhsh et al.also showed that unhealthy eating habits that
include fast food consumption result in lower academic achievements.
According to Krsital et al. (2001), individuals whos use labels report reductions
in fat intake but not an increase in fruits and vegetables simply because one can read
nutritional facts of processed food but not fruits and vegetables.
Wanjohi (2010) in his study revealed that the main cause of malnutrition among
children in the zone was the lack of enough food and a balanced diet. Poverty also
was found to be one root cause of manultrition among children.
Research has shown that obesity is also associated with increased levels of
hormone called leptin (Moran et al., 2003). Leptin is secreted from adipose (fat)
tissue and is involved in the regulation of food intake, energy expenditure and energy
balance in human (Moran et al., 2003); Whitney & Rolfes, 2002).
According to Dr. Peter Neman, (2004) a praticing pediatrician, has an identify
three main causes of obesity: genetics, over eating, and lack of exercise.
It has been shown by Trembley et al. (2003) that organized unorganized
physical activity is negatively associated with obesity.
