PF E-Nomination

Introduction:

Just as for all your financial assets, it is important to nominate someone to your PF
account so that in an unforeseen event of your demise, your PF savings can smoothly
pass on to your chosen nominee. It is therefore important to carefully consider the
family members whom you want to nominate. It is also important to review the record
from time to time and update / amend it as may be required.

Since all IBMer's are an Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) account holder, you would
have submitted your PF nomination form at the time of onboarding IBM. However, the
EPF organization has enabled the facility of e nominations which provides the benefit
of digitization and brings with it a more efficient and transparent processing of claims.

The rules of nomination in your EPF account and EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme)
account are different. As per the EPF Act, only following defined family members can
be nominated in your EPF account (i) in the case of a male member, his wife, his
children (whether married or unmarried), his dependent parents and his deceased
son's widow and children and ii) in the case of a female member, her husband, her
children (whether married or unmarried), her dependent parents, her husband's
dependent parents and her deceased son's widow and children. In case of EPS
account, only spouse and children can be nominated. It is also important to
understand the legal implication of nomination. Legally a nominee is only a trustee or
custodian of the asset and not necessarily the final beneficiary. The nominee is legally
bound to pass on the assets to whosoever can prove to be the legal heir (through a
Will, Succession Certificate etc). Hence it is advisable to nominate someone whom
you want to be the ultimate beneficiary.
