• The CTC Committee was formed in September 2001 soon after the
tragic terrorist attack of 9/11 in New York, while India had chaired
this Committee in the Security Council in 2011-12.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India is on track

to become the world’s third largest ethanol consumer by 2026 by
surpassing China.
• Ethanol demand in India tripled between 2017 and 2021 with
consumption expected at 3 crore litres in the last calendar year.
• United States and Brazil will precede India in ethanol consumption
by 2026.
• India has brought forward its target of 20% ethanol blending in
petrol to 2025. Also, ethanol-blended petrol will start selling from
2023 in India.

• Present Problems in India’s E20 blend –
o At present, a large segment of India’s existing vehicle fleet may
have compatibility issues with fuel blends above E10.
o The only way is to retrofit them, but that is also very costly.
Therefore, according to IAE, convincing the customers to buy
new flex-fuel vehicles compatible with E20 fuel is the option with
India.
• Biodiesel blending in diesel target is 5% by 2030.
