COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

● Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two


objects they modify (larger, smaller, faster). They are used in sentences where
two nouns are compared.

Adj + er + Than- Changes with one syllable adjectives. This method shows superiority or
intenseness.

SHORT ADJECTIVES (adjective + er + than)

My house is larger than hers.

This box is smaller than the one I lost.

Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog.

CVC -> If the adjective ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant combination (CVC),


double the final consonant before adding –er + than:

Big - bigger Ex: My living room is bigger than my bathroom.

Hot - hotter Ex: Rio de Janeiro is Hotter than São Paulo.

Fat - Fatter

Y -> The ''y'' is changed to an "i" + er + than

Examples:

Pretty - Prettier Ex: She is prettier than Maggie.

Busy - Busier Ex: Today I'm busier than yesterday.

Happy - Happier Ex: Good people are happier than sad ones.

Ugly - Uglier Ex: This old book is uglier than the new one.
Irregular adjectives -> Some adjectives don't follow any of the rules above. Here are
some of the most common irregular forms:

Good - Better Ex: She is better than me in math.

Bad - Worse

Far - Farther Ex: Tokyo is farther than Curitiba.

∙ LONG ADJECTIVES
(more + adjective + than)

Adjectives with two or more syllables. Adjectives don´t change and this form is used to
show superiority or intenseness .

Beautiful - More beautiful Ex: Angelina Jolie is more beautiful than Jennifer Lawrence.

Intelligent - More intellingent

Comfortable - More comfortable

establishes a comparison of equality, where two or more people/things are on
the same level. Also the adjectives don´t change!!

ADJECTIVES (as + adjective + as)

Apple is as healthy as orange.

A giraffe is as tall as a tree.

I am as beautiful as Kim Kardashian.

The comparative method used below ↓ was the comparative of inferiority. This
establishes a comparison, evidencing the inferiority of one person / thing over the
other.
Larissa is not as intelligent as her sister.

My brother is not as strong as me.
