Summary of the experiment

The aim of the experiment is to make an open molded composite box in a cuboidal shape. The
hand layup process was used for reinforcing the layers on each other in the mold and were held
together by use of a binding medium. Fiber sheets were shaped in aligned to mold using hand
compressions in order to get better results.

Materials used: Mold, PVA as release adgent, ER-099 SPL Epoxy and EH-150 hardner resins,
Reinforcing fibers.

Specific observations from the Experiment:

a. We should keep in mind that the resin should be spreaded fast in order to prevent the
early start of curing process and due to which that mixture will be non-usable.
b. Resign should not be applied in access as excess resin may lead to less strength and also
we should keep in mind that we won’t let the bubbles to form in the mixture as it may
also act as failure initiators in the product.
Assignment Question:

Procedure to make Race Car Body:

a. We first have to take a mold, which is cleaned and in shape of the Race car body and
make sure that the inner and outer dimensions of the body are alligned to each other.
b. As a racing car we need the body of the car to be streamlined and smooth, we can apply
suitable lubricants to the mold for a smoother finish.
c. We then coat the mold with releasing adgent such as PVA that precent resin from bonding
to the Car body mold.
d. On the outer side of the mold, gel is applied in order to maintain a better and a smoother
finish.
e. Fiberglass of required thickness is applied after the application of gel. Resin is used
which is made using a catalyst to hold the fiberglass.
f. Roller is rolled on the body till the body is smooth and allow the body of the car to get
solidified.
g. After solidification, the part is taken out of mold and trimmed from the edges to obtain
the required shape. Edges are further made smooth using the smoothning processes.
h. Check the obtained body with care and look for any air bubbles or cracks and apply the
remedies for the same accordingly. We obtained the required body and after this other
processes can be done on the same such as painting, attaching the body to the chassis.
