Experiment No. 9

Experiment title: Thread cutting and knurling operation to make a nut-bolt assembly.

Objectives:
The aim of the experiment is:
1. Understanding different thread nomenclatures.
2. Making metric threaded nut-bolt assembly with help of lathe machine.
3. Perfoming knurling operation on the nut of the nut-bolt assembly.
Material and apparatus used:
1. Lathe Machine,
2. Single point cutting tool,
3. Knurling tool,
4. Threading tool,
5. Parting tool,
6. Head-cap tools,
7. Thread gauge
8. Aluminium rod,
9. Lubricant,
10. Drill Bit Work-bench
11. Hand File
12. Center drill bit
13. Different sized drill bit.
Experimental procedure:

The experimental procedure can be divided into several sub sections. Lets talk about them one
by one in detail:
A. Facing operation:
Note: Initital dimensions of aluminium rod are as follows:
Diameter = 23.5 mm
Length = 130 mm

Final product has the dimensions as shoen in figure 1.

Figure 1

The facing operation was performed using the lathe machine on the aluminium rod using a
single point cutting tool.

B. Turning Operation:
As the diameter of the rod is around 23 and we need it to be 12, we need to reduce the
diameter. Turning operation is done for the purpose of the reduction of diameter.
C. Threading operation:
Now after the turning operation is done, Threading is the next step of the nut-bolt assembly. The
steps to be followed are:
a. Threading tool is installed after removing single point cutting tool and RPM is set to 40 to
60 using the lever.
b. The required pitch is 1.75 mm and set up the machine accordingly and then the
threading operation is performed.

D. Knurling operaiton:
Now the threading tool is removed and knurling tool is installed. Generally, we keep it a bit loose
as it has tendency to get self centered and then get tightened.
After tool installation, the operation is performed with the lubricant on for a better finish and
smooth operation. Lathe machine is operated at a low rpm of around 40 RPM.

E. Parting Operations:
Now, the knurling tool is replaced with parting tool and parting is done according to the required
dimesions as shown in figure 1. Also, the cutted side is smoothened with the filing operation.

F. Drilling Operation:
a. Center marking drill bit is attached and center is marked on workpiece. Drilling operation
is performed with the appropriate drill bit i.e. with the 10 mm diameter.
b. Required length is obtained and is smoothened by performing the filing on them.
G. Tapping of nut:
This is the final operation that is to be done. The tapping of the nut is done by tapping
tool for the internal threading with a required pitch of 1.75 mm.

Results and Discussion:

Figure 2: Final nut-bolt assembly.

The final product was obtained after performing the operations discussed in the procedure. The
final product is shown in figure 2.

Assignment Solution:
Given:
Bolt size: M10-0.5 with thread length 100 mm.
Hence, PL = 1.5 mm ; L = 100 mm ; D = 10 mm
Spindle speed = 31.5 mm/sec
PT , Pitch of lead screw = 1.5 mm.

Learning from the experiments:

1. Nomenclature of threads was revised during the experiment.

2. A lot of manufacturing processes were learnt to be performed for the nut bolt
assembly.
3. Importance and functions of lathe was realised.
