Summary of the experiment

We were required to design a bottle using the reverse engineering and then printing it using the 3D
printer. In this reverse engineering process, we basically take the already available bottle and
understand its working and relative movements of its different parts and then replicate that
product. Here, we took a bottle and applied reverse engineering and then printed the design made
through SolidWorks. To print the model, it is first required to het converted to the STL files and
then print them. After the printed parts of the bottle were obtained from the printer, the removal of
support material was done and parts were assembled. We can after that see that the reverse
engineered product was almost same to the original product.

Materials Used: A water bottle, Vernier calipers, stationery, SolidWorks & 3D printing software,
ABS along with a 3D printer.

The outcome of the experiment

Figure 1: Original Bottle and reverse engineered product

We can compare and conclude from the above figure that the reverse engineered product and the
original product are almost same and the results are satisfactory and obtained as expected.

Specific observations from the Experiment:

We can replicate the product but in the process of reverse engineering we may miss some of the
critical design points of the product that the original designer may have taken care of. Eg. in our
case, the bottle was measured but the corners still have some critical curvings missed and also
from the lower base to the middle, the bottle has somewhat increasing radius in the non linear
manner whereas in the reverse engineering, we thought of it as a linearly varying radius.

Assignment Question:

Choose a product and reverse engineer it

I choose a Mosquito repellent Liquid Bottle for this part of the experiment. It consisted of three
parts. It contained of a Plastic bottle that contained the liquid that contains chemicals, the wick for
absorbing and making the chemical reach to the heating zone, and a Cap air-tight separator.

Figure 8: Final Assembly of the Reverse engineered product

We can convert the SolidWorks file in the STL format and then print it using a 3D printer. We may
skip the wick for the 3D printing process as 3D printed wick cannot soak the liquid and can’t
transfer it to the heating zone.
