GANTT CHART
A Gantt chart is a graph or bar chart with a bar for each project activity that shows the passage
of time.

Kunwari, we will build a house. Sana all.

Here is our Gantt chart for the entire process.

The first activity is “Designing house and obtain

financing.” It will take approximately 3 months.
After those three months, only then that we can
now “Lay foundation” and at the same time “Order
and receive materials.” Syempre noh? Paano kita abi
maka lay foundation kung wala pa design? Basi mag-
kutkot kita da karon, magbuhos semento kag indi
gali santo sa plano? Oh edi katangahan xD Laying
the foundation will take 2 months while the order
will only take 1.

As we can see, we cannot “Build house” not until we

have laid the foundation. Ang gina-hulat sang “Build
house” is when both the foundation and the
materials are ready. As we can see, the “Order and
receive materials” can still be delayed for one
month kay maskin mag-delay ta bakal one month,
timing kang man gyapon nga patapos na man ang
laying of foundation. Therefore, ordering of materials can slack off for one month.

After laying the foundation, we can start the “build house” and the “Select paint.” Ari naman liwat, citeris paribus, indi
pa man ta ka paminta not until tapos na ang balay but we can already select paint. At first glance, we have a slack of 2
months for selecting paint, anyway, hulton ta man gyapon matapos ang balay until maka-paint kita. Kumbaga, there is
no need to rush. Slack is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the project. The thing is, “Select
carpet” cannot start not until we have the color of the paints. Syempre, para mag-match man sila eh. So kung mag-delay
ta 2 months for selecting paint, ma-idog man ang selecting carpet 2 months. If selecting carpet can start at month 6 (the
earliest possible), and we’d delay it for 2 months to start at month 8 and finish at end of month 9, ti lapaw na sa
“building house” nga time. Therefore, our actual nga slack for selecting paint is only 1 month at maximum para
consequentially, ang slack for carpet will also be one month. At maximum therefore, ceteris paribus, selecting paint will
finish at the end of month 6 and selecting carpet will finish at the end of month 7, Dungan lang sa end man sang build
house.

Finally, after we have built the house, received the paints and carpets, we can now finish everything else. Finishing
touches.

CPM/ PERT Critical Path Method/ Project Evaluation and Review Technique
A CPM/PERT network is drawn with branches and nodes.

With CPM, we use nodes to represent activities while the branches are arrows that show the precedence relationship.
We will call it Activity-on-Nodes.

Total Time
Path A: 12 4 7 9 months Path A is our critical path. At minimum, our project will finish
Path B: 12 5 6 7 8 months within 9 months.
Path C: 1 3 4 7 8 months
Path D: 1 3 5 6 7 7 months
With PERT, the arrows represent the activities while the nodes are simply joints of starts and ends of activities. We will
Activity-on-Arrows. Ang numbering sa mga nodes/ joints are pretty useless. You can
call it
replace it with letters if you want para indi kamo magtalang.

We use dummy because same branches cannot share the same start and same end.

AON – Activity Scheduling

Sa activity scheduling, we expand the nodes to show the following:
For our reference, here is the Gantt chart again:

Earliest Start is the highest of the latest finish of the previous nodes directly leading to the node.

Tan-awa nio ang Activity 2 and Activity 3, ang ila pinaka-timprano nga start (earliest start) is 3 (or 3 months),
that is because ang pinaka-late nga finish sang previous activity/ activities is 3.

Imagine tatlo kamo ka friends nga nagkwa exam at 12 PM. Dapat dungan kamo
puli – hultanay.
You can take and finish the exam within 2 hours.
Friend B can take and finish the exam within 3 hours.
Friend C can take and finish the exam within 4 hours.
Ano ang pinaka-timprano nyo puli?

Answer is: 4 PM because even una ka tapos, and even tapos na kamo ni Friend B, still indi pa kamo kapuli kay si Friend
C ga-kwa pa ya gyapon exam. 4 PM is the earliest start of “pagpuli.”

Tan-awa this time sa Gantt ang Activity 4 and Activity 5. Their Earliest Start is 5 (or 5 months). Same man
gyapon sa inyo friendship ah. Maskin tapos na ang Activity 3, still ongoing pa ang Activity 2. Therefore, Activities 4 and 5
can only start after the finish of activity 2, or after in total: 5 months.

Earliest Finish is simply adding the Earliest Start and Activity Duration.

Ang Latest Start and Latest Finish is yet to be found out. SECRET NALANG MUNA. Basi mag-BOOM aton brains. Kung
maka-lab-ot na ta sa punta, we will u-turn suma pabalik for the Latest Start and Latest Finish. That is then the time that
we will learn them.

SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK. BREATHE ANAY.

Earlies start is month 0.
Here is the map. Alangan.

Duration is 3 months

Earliest start + Duration = Earliest Finish

“Maaga kang nagsimula, Maaga kang natapos.”

Ang earliest start for Activity Build house and Select paint is 5 months. After 5 months, sure nagid nay a nga tapos na ang
tanan.
If you remembah, our Critical Path is 9 months.

LEZDU the “U-turn.” Actually we call this the forward pass. Halin sa pina-kapunta nga Activity, we will return back to fill-
out the Latest Start and Latest Finish.

The Latest Finish sa pinaka-end nga activity is the same with the Earliest Finish.
The Latest Finish of the present activity is the Latest Start of the next activity.
The Latest Start is the Latest Finish minus Activity duration.

Tan-awa nio ang Activity 2 and Activity 3: ila Latest Finish is 5. It is because the lowest Latest Finish we choose from the
next Activities. Duha ang available eh: 5 months and 6 months. Same for Activity 1: 3 months or 4 months.

End –
