1 General
This specification describes the basic requirements for piping in the WSA plant with regard to
dimensions, materials, valves, fittings, special design details, etc.
1.1 Piping
Pipe Classes (ASME): Covers piping subject to an internal pressure requiring a formal pressure
rating.
If not otherwise stated, the pressure - temperature ratings for pipe classes with pressure rating ≤
class 600 follow ASME B 16.5 (2009 edition). The pipe is stronger than flange and valve (FULL
RATED).
Pressure - temperature ratings for pipe classes with pressure rating ≥ class 900 are generally
based upon calculations for the worst design conditions for fluids to be found in each pipe class.
The pipe is weaker than flange and valve (DE RATED).
The minimum corrosion allowance for any element and any material other than stainless steel is
not less than 1.6 mm. For stainless steel it is 0.

Stud bolts shall be threaded full length with continuous threads according to ASME B18.2.1.
Pipes and fittings may be butt-welded for diameters ≥ 1” for all classes.
Cold bending is preferred for pipe sizes ≤ 1½”.
Bending machine shall be used.
Centreline radius of pipe bends shall be equal to 5 times the nominal pipe diameter.
If space is limited use socket weld elbows.
Summaries of the Pipe Classes included in this specification are provided at the end of this
section.

For required straight lengths for classical venturi tubes, please refer to ISO 5167-1 table 2.
If the primary device is installed in a pipe leading from an upstream open space or large vessel,
either directly or through any fitting, the total length of pipe between the open space and the
primary device shall never be less than 30 D. If any fitting is installed, then the straight lengths
given in the table, shall also apply between this fitting and the primary device.
If several fittings other than 90° bends are placed in series upstream from the primary device, the
following rule shall be applied:
Between the closest fitting (1) to the primary device and the primary device itself, there shall be a
minimum straight length as indicated for the fitting (1) in question and the actual values of ß in
the table.
But, in addition, between this fitting (1) and the preceding on (2), there shall be a straight length
equal to one half of the value given in the table for fitting (2) applicable to primary device of
diameter ratio ß = 0.7, whatever the actual value of ß may be. This requirement does not apply
when the fitting (2) is an abrupt symmetrical reduction, which case is covered by the paragraph
above.
The pipe may be provided with the necessary drain holes (for the removal of solid deposits and
fluids other than the measured fluid) and also with vent holes. There shall be no flow through
these drain holes and vent holes, while flow measurement is in progress.
The drain holes and vent holes should not be located near to the primary device, unless it is
unavoidable to do so. In such case, the diameter of these drain holes shall be smaller than 0.08
D and their location such as that the distance, measured on a straight line, from one of these
holes to a pressure tapping of the primary device placed on the same side of this primary device,
is always greater than 0.5 D. Furthermore, the centre-line of the drain hole or vent hole shall be
situated in an axial sector of the pipe which does not include any pressure tapping.

Installation Requirements
The inside surface of the pipe shall be straight, free from mill scales, pits or holes, reamer score or rifling,
bumps or other irregularities at least 10D upstream and 4D downstream of the primary device.
The pipe shall be cylindrical, i.e. no diameter differs from the average diameter D by more than 0.3%
upstream and ±3% downstream of primary device.
If boring is necessary to secure this degree of surface roughness and pipe roundness, such boring should
extend for at least a length of 4D upstream and 2D downstream of the primary device. The wall of the
bored pipe should join the unbored pipe wall at an angle of less than 30 degrees. The boring diameter
should be the minimum required to obtain the desired condition, and the boring should be done after any
necessary welding of flanges and pressure connections.
