Assignment III
2. The mass of a machine is 100 kg. Its vibrations are damped by a viscous dash pot which
diminishes amplitude of vibrations from 40 mm to 10 mm in three complete oscillations.
If the machine is mounted on four springs each of stiffness 25 kN/m, find (a) the
resistance of the dash pot at unit velocity, and (b) the periodic time of the damped
vibration.
4. A machine of mass 100 kg is supported on openings of total stiffness 800 kN/m and has a
rotating unbalanced element which results in a disturbing force of 400 N at a speed of
3000 r.p.m. Assuming the damping ratio as 0.25, determine : 1. the amplitude of
vibrations due to unbalance ; and 2. the transmitted force.
5. A motor generator set as shown in fig, consists of two armatures A and C connected with
flywheel between them at B. The modulus of rigidity of the connecting shaft is
84GN/m2. The system can vibrate torsionally with one node at 95 mm from A, the
flywheel being at antinode. Find 1. Position of the node; 2. The natural frequency of the
vibration; 3. radius of gyration of the armature C. The other data are given below,
6. A four cylinder engine and a flywheel coupled to a propeller are approximated to a 3
rotor system in which the engine is equivalent to a rotor of moment of inertia 800 kg-m 2,
the flywheel to a second rotor of 320 kg-m 2 and the propeller to a third rotor of 20 kg-m 2.
The first and second rotors being connected by 50 mm diameter and 2 meter long shaft
and the second and the third rotors being connected by a 25 mm diameter and 2 meter
long shaft. Take C =80 GN/m2. Find the natural frequency and position of the node.
