1.0 Introduction

Libraries serve an important role in society as portals to knowledge and culture. The
tools and services they provide foster learning, encourage literacy and education, and aid in
the formation of new ideas and views that are essential to a creative and dynamic society.
They also contribute to the preservation of an authentic record of knowledge created and
accumulated by previous generations. It would be difficult to progress research and human
knowledge or to maintain the world's cumulative knowledge and heritage for future
generations in a world without libraries. Therefore, by playing this role, it will show how
librarians help researchers who do not know about library knowledge.

Researchers who do not have library -related knowledge are known as novice users. Users
who have never used a specific library technology before. They need to learn how to perform
information retrieval tasks quickly and easily. Simple and intuitive interfaces are
preferable.Whenever library technologies is changed all users become relative novices.

2.0 Script Role Play

Syahmi & Miza : Researcher

Daniel & Sarah : Librarian

SCENE 1 : ( Syahmi and Miza talk about the assignment at the cafe. On the assignment,
they must carry out research on public libraries)

Miza : Syahmi, how do we get started on this task? Which library do we want to visit?

Syahmi : Let's go to the Alor Setar Digital Library since there are a lot of topics we can learn
there.

SCENE 2 : (Syahmi and Miza visit the library and ask about the difference between a public
library and school library)

Miza : Assalamualaikum and Good afternoon. I am Miza and this is my friend Syahmi. We
are both first-year Bachelor's students at a nearby university.

Syahmi : We would like to inquire and learn more. What is the difference between a public
library and a school library?

Daniel : Waalaikumusalam. Prior to that, what do you know about libraries?

Miza : A library, as we understand it, is a medium for collecting books as well as a location
for general reading.

Daniel : True, however the library's information is more extensive. Traditionally, a library is a
collection of books used for reading or study, as well as the structure or space in
which such a collection is maintained.

Sarah : Public libraries are designed to serve the entire community by offering lending and
reference services to a diverse range of professional and nonprofessional users.
Meanwhile, school libraries are designed to meet the needs of secondary and
elementary school students as well as their teachers. Furthermore, most of their
collection is designed to supplement the basic curriculum, compared to public
libraries, which have a wide range of collections, including special collections for
specific types of users, such as braille books. Besides that, public library also have
a lot of sections such as fiction section, non fiction section and children section, and
also provide a new book and latest section.

SCENE 3 : (The librarian explain about opac system)

Syahmi : Excuse me, but what is the purpose of these computers here? Is it used for
gaming?

Sarah : It seems like you haven't been to the library in a long time, Syahmi. These
computers are offered to allow users to search the OPAC for information.

Daniel : Let me explain about OPAC. OPAC is a library acronym for "Online Public Access
Catalog." An OPAC is an online bibliography of a library collection that is available
to the public OPACs originated as stand-alone online catalogues, frequently via
terminals to a mainframe library catalogue. Since the advent of the Internet, most
libraries have made their OPAC available to users all over the globe through a
server.

Sarah: As a result of having this OPAC, users will be able to search the library catalogue for
books and other items that are available in the library without having to visit the
library.

SCENE 4 : (Characteristic of reference librarian)

Miza : I'm thinking about becoming a librarian. What qualities or characteristics does a
librarian require?

Daniel : I’m a reference librarian, and as a reference librarian, the librarian must possess a
number of traits. Confidence, a good memory, appreciation of reference sources,
devotion or commitment to work, and other characteristics are among them.

SCENE 5: (Digital Resources)

Daniel : So far, do you have any questions about the public library? Is it sufficient for your
research?

Syahmi : Well, I was just thinking. Is there a collection of digital resources other than online
databases here?

Daniel : We have it, of course. E-journals and e-books are available at our public library.
Here is a tablet that we provide for users to read or search for their e-books and e-journals.
Our library also has portable e-book reading software, such as Adobe Reader, that can hold
up to 100 books at a time.

Syahmi : Wow, that's a lot of resources.

Daniel : Of course, and it is not boring because you can view many images, graphics, and
multimedia in that e-book.

SCENE 6 : (Borrowing Process)

Miza : Is it possible for me to borrow this book?

Sarah : Yeah, why not. We're not a bookshop !

Syahmi : Sorry, if I lose a loaned book, are there any complications?

Sarah : If you lose or damage a book, you will be charged for the lost/damaged book as well
as the lending library's processing costs. To borrow a book, just touch it on the
touch screen and then scan your ID card. Instructions will then be displayed on
screen. You can put multiple books in the hole in the front of the machine, but

please check that all of them are displayed on-screen. Besides, to return a book,
touch return on the touch screen, place your books in the machine and follow the
instructions displayed on the screen.

3.0 Conclusion

In conclusion, the best reference service combines mediated searching, formal and
informal instruction in information-seeking skills (using hard copy sources, non-print media
and automated systems), and assistance in the use of reference sources. It includes lessons
in analysis and evaluation of the value of the information retrieved and the accuracy or
correctness of the method of retrieval. Librarians also need to be proficient in several
technologies to help new users. This may not be a formal demand but helping the user by
explaining how information has been obtained is or should be a part of the user interface of
any services.
