Lesson on Plagiarism
Aviance Jenkins JAC105, Sect 03

Objectives: The student will define and identify plagiarism, discuss examples of
plagiarism, the consequences and tips to avoid plagiarism. The student will view videos
and other resources to complete the learning activity.

1. In your own words, define and explain Plagiarism.


Plagiarism is submitting or using content that copied from someone else or that
is not your own without proper citation.

2. In your research, find five examples and cases of Plagiarism. Explain the
situations and identify the consequences associated with the cases.
1. The first example is when Melena Trump stole Michelle Obama’s speech
word for word. There really was no serious consequence except she looked
dumb to the whole world.
2. The next example was Drake used the same lyrics as playa’s club and he
had to pay the artist $100,000.
3. Another example is when Joe Biden didn’t correctly cite serval lines of a
birthed politic speech third cause dipper investigation which eventually
caused his to withdrawal from the race.
4.Something else that happened was in 1891 Hellen Keller plagiarized parts of
her story form the frost fairy. This was no really consequent other than she
was accused of having cryptomeria
5.Lastly Justin Bieber and Usher stole the song “Something to love” from
Devin Mando Collen and are currently being sued to 10 million dollars.

3. Explain the following terms:


a. Copyright gives the owner the right to make legal copies
b. Attribution is the tracking of work like a footprint
c. Intellectual Property is a creative design that on has the rights to.
d. Paraphrasing is a way of shortening or summarizing in your own
words.
e. Citations are refences of where you got your information from.

4. Who is Jayson Blair and why is his story significant regarding plagiarism?
Blair is an American journalist and his story was so significates because he was
a liar a he got caught in his big lie.

5. Why is it important for journalists/communicators to avoid plagiarism?


It’s important for journalist /communicators to avoid plagiarism because
When telling a story, you always want it to be the truth and not any type of
fake new. It also is important because we want our story to be seen as
credible.

6. What is Hampton University’s stance on Plagiarism according to the Code of


Conduct? When caught plagiarizing this can end in dismal/expulsion from
University

7. After reading the materials and viewing the videos, explain three things about
plagiarism that you did not know before this lesson.

One thing I learned is that when you plagiarize someone’s work you could
possibly have to play them. Something else I learned Falsely claiming
being ill can be considered as plagiarism. Lastly, I learned that MLKJ was
accused of parts of his speech not being his own words.

8. Identify and explain three tips to avoid Plagiarism.


1. Keep track of your source material, try to keep up with why you’re
getting your information from
2. Make sure you are citing your work and don’t forget to ask the teacher
what their preference is
3. Reduce text by summarizing.

9. Record all sources used to complete this learning activity.
